Wednesday, November 17th, finds the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets tipping off for the first time this season.
The Wizards last played Monday in a win against the Pelicans while the Hornets played Sunday in a win versus the Warriors.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Hornets winning two of the three contests. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 65 of their 120 matches.
Washington Wizards
This iteration of the Wizards is vastly different from the last season beyond the most obvious shifting personnel. In the 72 game schedule of 2020-21, the Wizards held opponents to 100 points or under five times and struggled without Bradley Beal in the lineup (2-10).
In 13 games this season the Wiz have surpassed both markers by holding six opponents to 100 points or under and winning all three matches Beal didn’t participate in.
Without Beal in the lineup, the Wizards are showcasing their depth and precisely how much they’ve bought into head coach Wes Unseld Jr’s philosophy and system. The victory versus the Pelicans was their fifth in a row and second consecutive game without Beal in the lineup.
The most recent victory wasn’t easy as the Wizards trailed by 19 points but outscored the Pelicans 64-42 in the second half to nab the five-point victory.
The newest members of the Wizards figured prominently in the victory with Spencer Dinwiddie leading the way offering 27 points, nine assists, five rebounds, two steals, and connected on four of his eight 3-pointers.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (18), Montrezl Harrell (15), and Aaron Holiday (12) all reached double figures while Deni Avdija offered a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
After taking some time off to grieve the loss of his grandmother, Beal is listed as probable for Wednesday. Davis Bertans (ankle), Thomas Bryant (knee), and Rui Hachimura (personal) are out indefinitely.
Charlotte Hornets
The rollercoaster season of the Hornets continues. Charlotte got off to a hot 5-2 start to the season, suffered a five-game losing streak, and is now on a three-game winning streak.
The majority of their wins are versus Eastern clubs although this current win streak is where the Hornets collected their two wins against West teams with the most recent against the Warriors being arguably their best win of the season.
Miles Bridges led the way again posting 22 points with eight rebounds. LaMelo Ball scored 21 points adding seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Six Hornets reached double-figures with Terry Rozier scoring 20 but gaining control of an important late-game jump ball that cemented the victory. Cody Martin (12). Gordon Hayward (10), and Kelly Oubre Jr. (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Although the Hornets won the game they didn’t win many key categories. Rather, the Warriors won fast break and paint scoring as well as blocks, assists, and rebounds. Charlotte shot more 3-pointers and bested the Dubs in steals and one very big jump ball.
Gordon Hayward (hamstring) is probable while PJ Washington (elbow) remains out.
