Washington finally got its first win of the season against Minnesota.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn lost to Atlanta in their rematch at Barclays on New Year’s Day.
Washington has talent but getting the most out of this team seems like it is going to be a day by day trial and error sort of thing.
Washington Wizards
Russell Westbrook did not have a triple double in the Wizards win over Minnesota on Friday. That is because he didn’t play.
In his absence, Bradley Beal scored 31 points and an amazing 7 other players scored 11 or more on their way to 130 points.
Having second year player Rui Hachimura had to help. He only played 19 minutes but he was one of those from above. It was a weird game.
Weird in that the Wizards totally dominated in the first and third quarters, outscoring the Timberwolves by 36 points over those frames.
This season is shaping up a lot like last season with the Wizards playing at a fast ace and hoping for the best. They have scored 130 points in back to back games.
At that pace Westbrook has proven he can put up numbers but maybe he does not contribute as much to winning as we think. They have yet to win with him.
He is not on the injury list for this one so it will be the Wizards’ big two vs. the Nets.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets are a talented team. I kind of think we might spend all of this season wondering which games they are interested in winning and which ones they are not.
After seemingly putting Atlanta’s in its place a couple of days ago the Nets then lost to the Hawks at home in the rematch. The stars played, the only one missing was Spencer Dinwiddie who is out for the season.
After a 145-141 win the Nets could only muster 96 points in the near 20 point loss. The Hawks did not suddenly become a better defensive team so the result had a strong note of indifference.
With Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, the Nets are capable of beating anyone. However, until this group develops some defensive abilities or an identity, or both there are going to be some puzzling losses.
