Washington Wizards
A mad run up the Eastern Conference standings has Washington just a game-and-a-half out of the playoffs with a final game left in the month of February.
Washington returned home from a West Coast road trip to take care of Minnesota last night, 128–112.
It was close early but Washington pulled away in the third quarter. Bradley Beal had 34 points on 12-of-23 from the field. Russell Westbrook had another triple-double, his fifth in seven games.
Westbrook had at least a dozen points, rebounds and assists against the Timberwolves. He’s been no more than a single rebound or assist shy of a triple-double in nine consecutive games.
But it hasn’t just been Beal and Westbrook. Davis Bertans made five threes off the bench against Minnesota on Saturday. Garrison Matthews needed just six field goal attempts (he made all seven of his free throws) to score 18 points without a turnover.
Even Alex Len showed up and scored ten off the bench. Washington has enough role players engaged at the moment to get decent production out of two or three of them every night, seemingly.
Boston Celtics
The Wizards’ hot streak of seven wins in eight games started with a matinee victory over Boston on Valentine’s Day.
Washington won that game by 13 points at home by holding Jayson Tatum to just six points on predictably terrible shooting numbers.
Since then, Boston has gone just 3–4. It has continued to miss Marcus Smart, who will not return until after the All-Star Break. Recently, Jaylen Brown has run into knee troubles.
Brown played in Boston’s most recent game — a narrow victory in Indiana — but all the minutes may be starting to add up. He missed two games at the start of this month, before the Washington game, and is listed as questionable for this one.
Fortunately for Boston, Kemba Walker is playing better. He had his best game of the season against the Pacers Friday, scoring 32 points and dishing six assists with only one turnover.
A couple months ago, most everyone considered Boston and Washington in two different leagues, metaphorically speaking.
Now Boston is in last place in the Atlantic and with only a narrow lead over Washington in the conference standings. It will get even tighter if it the Celtics can’t hold home court here.

But the Celtics will not cover this number without Brown. I’m not anticipating him to miss this game but the possibility does exist and must be acknowledged.
Then there’s just the fact that Washington seems to be a team revolutionized. It actually just a lean because the back-to-back will affect the Wizards too, but I do prefer the points here.
