Wednesday, February 17th finds the LA Clippers hosting the Utah Jazz for the second time this season. In the initial meeting on January 1st, the Jazz won 106-100. Both squads played and won on Monday.
The Jazz holds the all-time record between the clubs with 108 wins in 188 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with the Jazz taking two of three contests.
Utah Jazz
Despite Ben Simmons posting a career-high 42 points and Tobias Harris a season-high 36 points the Jazz rolled to a fairly easy 134-123 victory. The fact Joel Embiid was out with back tightness likely helped the Jazz yet they were also missing Mike Conley.
It was an entertaining match but without Embiid or Conley, it’s tough to assess how these teams match up. Utah isn’t losing sleep over that fact though as they extended their current win streak to eight games in a row.
While many (raises hand) wonder if the Jazz can keep this current dominance rolling all season and into the postseason the Clippers will be keen to demonstrate Utah won’t have what it takes to beat the LA powerhouses.
Meanwhile, Jordan Clarkson scored 40 points against the 76ers to augment his Sixth Man of the Year candidacy.
Donovan Mitchell scored 24 while Joe Ingles added 20 points and the other trio of starters (Rudy Gobert, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Royce O’Neale) each scored 11.
Conley (hamstring) has missed the last five games and is listed as questionable for Wednesday. Elijah Hughes (ankle) is listed as day-to-day on the injury report. Udoka Azubuike (ankle) is out.
LA Clippers
The Clippers own a four-game win streak. Having taken care of business leading into this match no doubt the Clippers will be dialed in to send a message to the Jazz but injuries could make their desires difficult to achieve.
The winning streak included the defeat of the Cavaliers and Heat without Kawhi Leonard or Paul George in the lineup but the Jazz is a very different beast.
Rising up to offer extra assistance was Marcus Morris Sr. who got the rare start and delivered in the opportunity leading the Clippers with his best scoring output of the season (32 points). Morris hit six of his eight 3-point attempts.
Lou Williams was the star in the previous win over the Cavaliers and had another strong effort with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Ivica Zubac delivered 22 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Terance Mann (15), Amir Coffee (15), and Luke Kennard (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Leonard is nursing a leg contusion while George has a foot injury. They both missed the last two games.
In terms of the injury updates, Leonard was upgraded to questionable so he’ll likely play. Nicolas Batum (concussion) is listed as day-to-day while George (foot) and Jay Scrubb are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 8-2 in the teams last 10 meetings.
- The Jazz are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 6-4 in the last 10 contests between the clubs
Free Utah Jazz vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
If Kawhi and PG can’t play on Wednesday it’ll be an uphill battle for the Clippers. If one or both stars return this could offer a peek at a Western Conference semi or finals series.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Clippers +2.5
The Clippers boast the top-rated 3-point efficiency (42.2%) while the Jazz own the sixth-best perimeter defense (35.3%). Whoever wins that battle likely takes the game.
Without George and potentially Batum I know the logical pick is Utah but if Leonard returns I think his presence, the LA bigs, and their defense make this a very competitive match (and I also think LA wants to send a message).
