(4-3) Utah Jazz vs. Golden State Warriors (4-0)
This second round matchup, with the #1 seed Golden State Warriors facing off against the #5 seed Utah Jazz is the underrated semifinal series in these playoffs.
The season series was won by the Warriors 2-1, with an average final score of 103-92. The Warriors had won 7 in a row before losing on April 10th.
Utah comes into this series after a tough fought series against the Clippers. Being able to close the series out on the road against a team that is more talented on paper.
The Jazz face an impossible task to beat the Warriors 4 times out of seven, but is it out of the question that they can steal a game or two?
Gordon Hayward is one of the best small forwards in the NBA and he stepped up in a big way in the series against the Clippers. While struggling during the season against Los Angeles, he dominated the 6 games he played significant minutes.
Hayward averaged 27 points and 8 rebounds in the 6 games and looked like an MVP candidate. Facing off against Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson? That’s going to be a much tougher task and I will be surprised if Hayward puts up those kinds of numbers in this series.
Rudy Gobert has been one of the best centers in the NBA this season, averaging a double double and routinely being a defensive presence in the paint. He missed a few games in the series against Los Angeles due to a bone bruise, but still was able to put up double doubles at relatively full strength.
The Warriors will more than likely try to go small against Gobert, but Draymond Green does not have the height or strength to match-up with him, so the coaching staff may opt to go with Javale McGee in late game situations.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors made easy work of the Trailblazers in their sweep in round 1, even putting up a 45 point 1st quarter. This team is somehow better than last year and have been the favorite to win the NBa title all season long.
Steph Curry absolutely put on show in the four game series, closing it out with 34 and 37 point performances on the road. He shot 7-11 from behind the arc in game 4, and I expect him to average 35 points in this series, as George Hill was routinely dominated by Chris Paul in round 1.
Kevin Durant made his scoring look easy against Portland, and I expect more of the same from him against Gordon Hayward. Durant shot 59% from the floor and there isn’t anyone on Utah that can slow him down in an isolation matchup.
Klay Thompson will prove he is still one of the best players in the NBA and should put on a defensive clinic against the Jazz wing players. Rodney Hood and George Hill will struggle to score, and I still believe Thompson will have at least two 30 point performances in this series.
Draymond Green will be a matchup problem for the Jazz front court and he has the basketball IQ that will allow him to make the smart play when running the fast break. Can he get three triple doubles in this series?
Free Utah Jazz vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Series Prediction:
Utah surprisingly beat the Clippers on the road, but I don’t think they have a chance to even win a game against the Warriors. This should be an easy sweep for Golden State.
