(5-3) Utah Jazz vs. Denver Nuggets (7-1)
Donovan Mitchell got an MRI on a bum hamstring that came back negative on Thursday. That’s good news for Utah but Mitchell will still miss Thursday’s home game against Memphis.
Perhaps it’s precautionary so that he can join his team for the trip out to Denver for a game the very next night, or maybe he’ll miss this game too. Considering it’s early in the season, it’s Mitchell and it’s a hamstring, I’m thinking it’s the latter.
The Northwest Division is one of the best and most interesting in the NBA, just as it was a year ago. The Trail Blazers won it a year ago but the Nuggets got off to a slow start, which hasn’t been the case this season. Denver has shot ahead to the lead and Portland isn’t far off the pace.
The Timberwolves and Thunder, the two public teams, are the two worst thus far and I’m expecting it will stay that way because all three of the teams ahead of them are legit. All five teams in this division are playoff caliber, though.
Let’s see how Utah responds on Thursday without Mitchell. Long-Term, the Jazz need him but short-term, this is a good opportunity for Utah to play the team basketball it’s capable of and getting a couple wins without their young star. I like the opportunity it presents for Utah, at least on Friday against the Grizzlies.
Denver has just one loss so far this season and has the distinction of being the only team to take down the Warriors in the early going, when it won by a bucket at the Pepsi Center.
I wrote about this a week or so ago, but I like Denver at this stage of the season because Nikola Jokic and Paul Millsap are both healthy and full of energy. Those are two big guys though and I’m not sure they will get better as the year wears on, even if they can both stay healthy, which hasn’t been the case yet for them.
As the wear and tear builds, how will each guy be at running the floor against younger and quicker opponents? Millsap has logged a lot of minutes over the years and conditioning isn’t a strength of Jokic. Denver better find a balance between making hay early and also finding a way to keep those guys fresh.
One way to keep those guys fresh is to only play them twenty minutes per game, like they did in a nineteen-point win over Cleveland on Thursday night.
Jokic scored just four points but Juancho Hermangomez scored a season-high twenty-three to lead the team. Trey Lyles and Mason Plumlee had double-figures off the bench, too.
With the starters fresh, this is a nice spot for Denver to make a statement to Utah in the first meeting of the season.
