Wednesday, January 5th finds the Utah Jazz tipping off versus the Denver Nuggets in the second meeting this season. Utah won the initial meeting 122-110 on October 26th. The teams will play in Denver on January 16th and finish the series in Utah on February 2nd.
Both teams played on Monday with Denver losing 89-103 to the Mavericks while the Jazz beat the Pelicans 115-104.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Warriors in 118 of their 202 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with Utah taking two of the three contests.
Utah Jazz
It didn’t take long for the Jazz to get back in the win column following their loss to the Warriors on the weekend. The win versus the Pelicans on Monday was almost clinical in nature.
The Jazz shot 48.7 percent from the perimeter making 19 deep balls with six different players connecting on 3-pointers led by the trio of Donovan Mitchell, Bogdan Bogdanovic (who both hit five), and Mike Conley who made four and scored 29, 21, and 22 points respectively.
Notably, the Jazz relied heavily on the deep ball given they weren’t getting out in transition (no fast-break points) and weren’t overly effective in the paint (38 points versus 50 for New Orleans).
This performance wasn’t an outlier as the Jazz ranks 24th both for fast-break scoring (10.3) and points scored off turnovers (14.8). While they typically perform better in the paint and on second-chance opportunities the game plan template is obvious.
And that’s why so many can’t commit to putting the Jazz in the same category as the Warriors and Suns — they lack offensive versatility and haven’t demonstrated an ability to adapt.
Rudy Gobert delivered a double-double of 10 points and 18 rebounds plus two steals, and two blocks while Jordan Clarkson (14) was the other Jazz player to score in double-figures.
Utah limps into this match with Rudy Gobert (shoulder), Bojan Bogdanovic (finger), Hassan Whiteside (concussion), Royce O’Neale (shoulder), and Udoka Azubuike (ankle) all questionable.
Donovan Mitchell (back), Eric Paschall (personal), and Jordan Clarkson (back) are probable while Joe Ingles (COVID) is out
Denver Nuggets
The mini three-game win streak came to an end as arguably the two best European NBA players attempted to lead their clubs to victory. Nikola Jokic delivered a double-double of 27 points and 16 rebounds plus three assists and two steals.
His counterpart Luka Doncic won the night serving up his own double-double of 21 points and 15 assists plus eight rebounds, and four steals.
Jokic is captaining a severely shorthanded Nuggets squad who are missing core contributors while Doncic just returned a game ago from a 10 game absence and led his Mavericks without Kristaps Porzingis available (entered protocols).
It was a game that highlighted Denver’s strengths and weaknesses. From a positive perspective, they won the glass 47 to 28 (11 to 5 offensive boards) and outscored Dallas 44 to 34 in the paint.
On the negative side of the equation, the Nuggets shot 24% from the perimeter and coughed up 28 points via 26 turnovers.
Aaron Gordon (15) and Will Barton (12) were the only other Nuggets to reach double-digit scoring.
As for the Nuggets, their greatest issue continues to be injuries with Monte Morris and Jeff Green both out due to protocols. Also out are Vlato Cancar (foot), Markus Howard (knee), Jamal Murry (ACL), PJ Dozier (ACL), and Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery).
Austin Rivers (thumb), Zeke Nnaji (quarantine), and Bones Hyland (conditioning) are all questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Utah Jazz vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
Although the Jazz is deeper they arrive with a ton of players uncertain to suit up. This is also the type of game where Jokic will want to put his stamp on a win and send a message to Utah for the postseason. If Gobert can’t go that increases the odds of a big night for the Joker.
