Friday, January 8th finds the Toronto Raptors vs. Sacramento Kings playing for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
The Kings hold the all-time record between the clubs with 26 wins in 47 meetings. Last season, the clubs played twice with the Raptors winning both contests.
Toronto Raptors
The season start for the Raptors has been brutal. In six of their seven matches. they’ve held double-digit leads but were only able to translate the match against New York into a win. That odd streak ended against the Suns but they still lost the game.
The team has dealt with adversity losing both Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol this offseason and are the only team in the NBA playing away from home (in Tampa Bay). Adding to their woes, star Pascal Siakam seemed to carry over his Disney bubble struggles to start this season.
His best effort came versus Phoenix with 32 points, nine rebounds (four offensive boards), three assists, a steal, and a block. Each game out he’s looked a bit better but shooting 52% (11 of 21) and getting to line 14 times is much more typical for the young star.
Kyle Lowry added 24 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. OG Anunoby (20), Fred VanVleet (13), and Norman Powell (13) were the other double-figure contributors.
Patrick McCaw is healing from offseason knee surgery and is out indefinitely.
Sacramento Kings
Following back-to-back losses to the Rockets and then to the Warriors the Kings got back to .500 via a win versus the Chicago Bulls.
While they got the win the team is dealing with drama with apparent tension with Marvin Bagley Jr. that played out on social media with his father asking the Kings to trade him.
Making matters worse De’Aaron Fox’s father chimed in saying they should. Speaking of Fox, through the early season he’s looked great but in the last match, he was forced to leave early when his hamstring tightened which makes his presence Friday uncertain.
In the win over the Bulls, seven Kings scored in double figures with Bagley producing a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Richaun Holmes was the top scorer with 24 points.
Harrison Barnes (20), Tyrese Haliburton (17), Glenn Robinson III (14) Nemanja Bjelica (12), and Buddy Hield (10) were the other double-digit contributors.
Fox (hamstring) and Jabari Parker who missed the last two games for personal reasons are both questionable for Friday.
Richaun Holmes injured his ankle versus the Bulls but is expected to play versus the Raptors. DaQuan Jeffries and has yet to play this season and is out indefinitely.

Although I was ready to stay off picking the Raptors until they collected a win this last match versus the Suns they looked much more like the squad of the past few seasons. Overall their defense has been close but the offensive lapse and poor shooting efficiency were concerning.
Both looked better in Phoenix which might simply be a factor of how important Siakam is to their team. The key will now be getting VanVleet, Siakam, and Lowry all performing in the same game.
