Because Toronto played the Blazers before the trade deadline last season and their home game was in Tampa Bay Norman Powell and Gary Trent Jr. haven’t played in front of their former team’s fans. GTJ will make his return on Monday while Powell’s turn comes on January 23rd.
The Raptors last played Saturday losing to the Pistons while the Blazers played the front side of a back-to-back in a 125-95 beat down by the Nuggets.
Toronto Raptors
Detroit looked like a different team than the one who played the night prior in Cleveland in their win versus the Raptors and gave Dwane Casey a commanding 7-3 all-time win margin over his former team.
Granted, the Raptors were shorthanded with Fred VanVleet sitting out due to a nagging groin injury. Precious Achuiwa was also sidelined, injured on the Andre Drummond block/follow-through foul that was reversed by the coach’s challenge (side-eye).
Khem Birch returned along with Pascal Siakam while Goran Dragic started in place of VanVleet. As much as there were segments of the offense stalling Toronto still scored 121 points so it was the defense where the copious lineup changes clearly lacked chemistry.
It’s a game the Raps will undoubtedly regret letting get away and highlighted how important VanVleet is. The good news was Siakam looked great in his third game back from offseason shoulder surgery.
He registered a double-double of 25 points (9 of 14) with 12 rebounds (7 offensive), 7 assists, a steal, and hit 2 of 3 deep balls.
VanVleet (groin), Achuiwa (shoulder), and Chris Boucher (back) are all questionable while Yuta Watanabe (calf) is out.
Portland Trail Blazers
Recently I opined there was a logical rationale for Damian Lillard’s shooting woes were tied to an abdominal issue. It was far too long of a shooting malaise for it not to be something physical.
He spent time last year dealing with an abdominal strain, was still plagued by it in the Olympics (hence his off shooting in Toyko). So when the injury report came out this weekend stating Dame would sit Sunday with “abdominal” as the reason it wasn’t unexpected.
Clearly, the best way to heal would be rest— and we’re talking a substantial period as severe strains require six weeks or longer.
While it might not seem logical that abs are essential for basketball they are. Whether it’s getting down in a defensive stance to do lateral slides, bodying up someone, or yup — shooting.
So the question is – will the Blazers (and more importantly Dame) take the time required for him to get back to 100 percent or will it be a quick rest with him playing through some pain?
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Toronto Raptors vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Of the potential quintet of Raptors who could be out VanVleet is the most important but if all three bigs are out that’s equally concerning. That said if Lillard is out again that’s a large gap for the Blazers to fill plus they played Sunday.
Toronto felt like being in Tampa last season was the equivalent of playing 72 road games and they seem to be benefiting from that experience as they boast a better road record (5-1) than at home (2-6).
Injuries will play a big role in this game, but I’m taking the Raptors and I’m not sure I would be if they were playing at home.
