Friday, December 9th the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic start a baseball set in Orlando with the second game Sunday marking the second and third of four meetings this season. Toronto won the initial December 3rd match 121-108 and will host the final meeting on February 14th.
Both teams played Wednesday with the Raptors beating the Lakers 126-113 while the Magic shocked the Clippers winning 116-111 in overtime.
Last season, the squads played three times with Toronto taking two of the three contests. The Raptors hold the all-time record having bested the Magic in 55 of their 96 matches.
Toronto Raptors
Through the first quarter of this campaign, the Raptors were ravaged by injuries with OG Anunoby the only player to not miss a game. Their toughest schedule also happened to be in this time frame meaning opponents got to face them while they were severely shorthanded.
So there wasn’t going to be any tears shed by the Raptors getting to play the Lakers without LeBron James and Anthony Davis active. Instead, they delivered a professional effort that was never as close as the final score.
The core group all produced with Pascal Siakam (25 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) and Scottie Barnes (13 points, 17 rebounds) each posting double-doubles. Fred VanVleet broke out of his shooting funk with 25 points although he still struggled from deep (3 of 12).
OG Anuoby (23), Gary Trent Jr. (18), and Chris Boucher (16) were the other double-figure scorers.
On offense, the Raptors score 110.8 points per game (22nd) shooting 45.1% from the field (25th) and 33.0% from deep (25th).
Defensively, the Raptors allow 109.8 opponent points per game ranking (7th) while they shoot 48.4% (26th) from the field and 35.4% from deep (14th).
Otto Porter Jr. (toe dislocation) is questionable. Juancho Hernangomez (ankle) and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) are out.
Orlando Magic
Although they have just six wins on the season their latest victory was the most impressive. Orlando was down 18 points but came back to force overtime and then capitalized on Clippers’ miscues in the extra frame to collect the W.
Rookie Paolo Banchero led the way with 23 points on 5 of 13 but his 14 trips to the charity stripe contributed 13 of those points. Mo Wagner registered a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Offense remains the issue for Orlando as they average 107.6 points per game ranking 29th overall. They shoot 46.6% from the field and 33.6% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 24th respectively.
Defensively, Orlando holds their opponents to 114.2 points per game ranking 18th. The Magic allow opponents to shoot 48.0% from the field ranking 24th and foes shoot 34.1% from the perimeter ranking seventh overall.
Gary Harris (hamstring), Jalen Suggs (ankle), and Chuma Okeke (knee) are questionable. Wendell Carter Jr. (foot) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are out indefinitely.

If the Raptors can sweep the baseball set and Atlanta/Indy each loses one of their matches Toronto would move solely into fifth. Similarly, Brooklyn is a half-game up and will play the Raptors next Friday (Dec 16).
Theorthetically a week from today the Raptors could have ascended three ladder rungs to fourth. They can only control their own outcome, so expect another professional effort.
