Wednesday, December 22nd, finds the Toronto Raptors facing the Chicago Bulls for the second time this season. Chicago won the October 25th match (111-108).
The game scheduled to occur in Toronto this past Thursday (December 16th) was postponed and will be made up later this season plus they’ll play in Chicago on March 21st as well.
Toronto last played Saturday defeating the severely undermanned Warriors 119-100 while the Bulls played a back-to-back set beating both the Lakers (115-110) and the Rockets (133-118).
Toronto Raptors
Another rewrite based on a flurry of injury updates completely wiping out the Raptors’ roster.
Four Raptors had entered health and safety protocols on the weekend (Pascal Siakam, Dalano Banton, Gary Trent Jr., and Justin Champagnie) while OG Anunoby and Precious Achuiwa had returned from missing 13 and four games respectively.
But the good luck ran out with Fred VanVleet (who had COVID last year), Scottie Barnes, Malachi Flynn, and Precious Achiuwa (who just returned from being isolated for contact and repeatedly tested negative) testing positive.
With Goran Dragic (personal), Khem Birch (knee), and David Johnson (calf) also out Nick Nurse headed to Chicago with five players from the roster. All four point guards are out, both centers, both two-way players, four of five typical starters and four of the five top substitutions.
Anunoby is the lone starter available but the team had intended to ease him back in and not overtax his minutes. That probably gets thrown out the window now unless they are concerned he could re-injure himself.
Timing is everything and while the Bulls were able to postpone two games the Raptors won’t have that same option so had to sign four G-League players (Nik Stauskas, Brandon Goodwin, Juwan Morgan, DJ Wilson).
Feels like deja vu of last season – the Raptors posted one of the best January records then got wiped out by COVID and the season was lost. They’ve won five of seven games losing the other two by a cumulative three points (one in overtime).
Hopefully being vaccinated will help the players recovery and it won’t derail their season for the second year in a row.
Chicago Bulls
DeMar DeRozan sure came back from quarantine firing on all cylinders. The veteran followed up a 38 point effort against the Lakers by leading his Bulls with 26 points, six assists, and three rebounds in the rout of the Rockets.
Coby White who also spent time in quarantine had a strong night leading the Bulls reserves with 24 points. Lonzo Ball had a big night scoring 19 points adding eight assists, five rebounds, five steals, and a block.
Nikola Vucevic (18), Alfonzo McKinnie (16), and Tyler Cook (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Although the Bulls got back DeRozan, White. and Javonte Green and Derrick Jones Jr. on Sunday the latter had to leave the match after tweaking his hamstring.
Zach LaVine, Alize Johnson, Troy Brown Jr., and Ayo Dosunmu remain in quarantine while Matt Thomas is working on his conditioning to return. Additionally, Alex Caruso is questionable after exiting Monday with a foot injury. Patrick Williams (thumb) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 6-4 in their last 10 head to head contests
- The Bulls are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over Under is 4-6 in the team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction
It’s interesting the NBA postponed Chicago playing in Toronto last Thursday because 10 Bulls were out but are forging ahead with this match with 11 Raptors out including four of five starters and three of the next four substitutions.
With four G-League (NOT Raptors 905) players meeting their team in Chicago this match could end up breaking the 73 point differential set by the Grizzlies versus the Thunder recently.
