Saturday, March 13th the Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets play for the third and final time this season. Toronto won both previous games on January 14th (111-108) and 16th (116-113).
The Hornets hold the all-time record between the squads with 45 victories in 85 meetings. Last season the teams played three times with the Raptors taking two of three contests.
Toronto Raptors
Nick Nurse returned to the court but six coaches, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Malachi Flynn, and Patrick McCaw remain in quarantine.
Although no official word has been offered the presumption is this group must’ve tested positive since they’ve been out 10 or more days which longer than typical for contact tracing.
Meanwhile, the Raptors lost a one-point heartbreaker to the Hawks after they overcame a 19 point deficit and built a double-digit lead.
A common pattern was repeated with Raptors opponents gaining a decided free throw advantage (Hawks 35 to Raptors 23) and one player taking double-figure attempts (Trae Young – 16).
Case in point:
- 76ers 28-14, (Embiid 16), 7P loss
- Pelicans 47-27, 4P loss
- Blazers 25-12, 1P loss
- Bucks 26-12, (Antetokounmpo 14), 7P loss
- Nets 29 -14, 6P win
- 76ers 35-18, (Embiid/Simmons 14 each), 7P win
- 76ers 30-13, (Embiid 12), 7P loss
- Heat 28 -17, 8P loss
- Celtics 40 -17, (Brown 16), 7P loss
At least seven lost opportunities of the eight (Heat) which would equate to Toronto being third. It punctuates the need for Nurse to figure out why opponents are getting calls and the Raptors aren’t. Other teams like the Heat, Jazz, 76ers, and Knicks all play physically but don’t suffer the same issues so there must be tweaks to be made.
Expectations are the same five players are out Saturday.
Charlotte Hornets
At season start Hornets head coach James Borrego was bringing rookie LiMelo Ball off the bench and wanted to bring him along slowly. But a knee injury to Devonte Graham resulted in Ball moving into the starting rotation.
A month later, with Graham back Ball has cemented his starting spot.
The Hornets are excelling via defined roles. Case in point, Gordon Hayward is providing leadership and is the top point-getter (21.4 points). Each of PJ Washington, Miles Bridges, and Graham have developed quickly and become essential contributors.
LiMelo is the dynamic point guard who brings enthusiasm and excitement to the hardwood while Cody Zeller and Bismack Biyombo offer depth up front.
Arguably the player who has made the greatest impact toward the Hornets’ current seventh seed is Terry Rozier. In his first season, he never seemed to mesh or find his niche. This season he’s become the closer and it’s a role he relishes.
In their recent victory versus the Pistons, it was Rozier who took over in the clutch scoring 12 of his 17 points and erased a cold shooting night to finish 6 of 14 by hitting 4 of 5 shots in a little over three minutes.
Washington led the scoring with 20 points while Hayward (17), and Zeller (15) were the other double-figure scorers.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in their last 10 head to head meetings
- The Hornets are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 7-2-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings

After back-to-back games where the Raptors played well enough to win they’ll be in tough facing the healthy Hornets.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Hornets ATS
That doesn’t mean Kyle Lowry won’t be fuming especially after taking a shot from Young that cut his face (no foul called by the way). Bottom line, until Toronto figures out this foul disparity it doesn’t bode well for them.
