Tuesday, December 14th finds the Toronto Raptors facing the Brooklyn Nets in their second meeting this season. In the initial meeting on November 7th, the Nets defeated the Raptors 116-103.
Brooklyn beat Detroit 116-104 on Sunday while the Raptors’won 124-101 versus the Kings on Monday.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Raptors taking two of the three contests. The Raptors hold the advantage all-time having won 58 times of the club’s 101 meetings.
Toronto Raptors
When playing a back-to-back set the ideal scenario is to take care of business early in the front game so your starters are fresh in the second game. Not an easy template to follow but pretty close to what the Raptors did Monday.
The Raptors set season highs in several categories. Nine out of the 11 Raptors who played scored in double-figures and the bench registered 53 points
In addition, the 70 first-half points, 28 assists, 68 points in the paint, and 54.1% from the field were also season-highs.
Scottie Barnes had a career-best five blocks along with 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Nick Nurse recognized his rookie’s energy was through the roof so he kept him on the floor with an all-bench unit and the results were palpable.
Reserve Yuta Watanabe collected a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Boucher (17) continues to start and it’s helped unleash the offense he was struggling to find early this season.
Pascal Siakam (16), Fred VanVleet (12), Malachi Flynn (14), Svi Mykhailiuk (11), Gary Trent Jr (10), and Justin Champagnie (10) all hit double scores.
Precious Achiuwa (shoulder/health and safety) is out OG Anunoby (hip) and Khem Birch (knee) will miss their 13th and eighth consecutive games respectively.
Brooklyn Nets
Kevin Durant may go down in history as the best shooting big man ever. He put those skills on display Sunday as he dropped 51 points on the Pistons.
It also gives KD bragging rights versus teammates – the 51 points at Little Caesars bested Blake Griffin’s former record (50). Moreover, James Harden who rested in this match was unable to lead Brooklyn to the win in Houston with Durant resting but KD easily got the job done.
Clearly, the team has confidence when Durant plays (what player or team wouldn’t) but doesn’t have the same natural ease with Harden, at least not yet.
In addition to his 51 points, KD also provided seven rebounds, nine assists, a steal, and two blocks. Patty Mills scored 18, LaMarcus Aldridge offered 15 points and rookie Cam Thomas chipped in 13 points as the other double-digit contributors.
Paul Millsap (quarantine) Joe Harris (ankle), and Kyrie Irving (personal) are all out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
With the extra day off and playing at Barclays, Brooklyn theoretically should win but it’s not a given. Toronto has won four of five, held opponents to 96.5 points in the last six contests, and are 3-1 in second games of B2B’s.
If you were to ask who has the 5th vs. 16th ranked defense there is no way I pick the Nets as the better defenders but sure enough, that’s the case.
A telling difference between these squads are the eight miscellaneous categories where the Raptor ranks top 3 in three offensive and top 5 in three defensive categories while the Nets are bottom eight/seven in two offensive and two defensive categories.
With all that — I’m still uncertain about the Raptors who really need their bigs and OG back but I like them to keep it closer than the spread.
