The Spurs hold the all-time record between the clubs with 98 wins in 176 meetings. Last season, the clubs played three times with San Antonio taking two of the three contests.
San Antonio Spurs
It’s been a tough two games for the Spurs. Wednesday they faced Toronto who was 1-11 in the second games of back-to-back sets. Moreover, Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, Gary Trent Jr., and DeAndre Bembry were all out.
Coach Nick Nurse had one available guard (rookie Malachi Flynn) got creative with lineups featuring five big men and it proved too much for the Spurs.
Friday, again they got the lucky bounce with Damian Lillard out for Portland but lost a 106-107 heartbreaker when they were unable to score in spite of three opportunities at game end.
DeMar DeRozan led the way with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds. Dejounte Murray delivered a triple-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Jakob Poeltl dropped 17 points and eight rebounds. Drew Eubanks (15) and Derrick White (13) were the other double-figure contributors.
The contrast of the two losses was stark. In the loss to the Raptors, they were outrebounded 54-41 and lost the paint scoring battle (48-36).
San Antonio flipped that result versus the Blazers winning the boards (49-38) as well as points in the paint scoring (62-42). While they shot 43.6 percent from deep versus Toronto their perimeter shot failed them (30.4%) against Portland.
Gorgui Dieng (shoulder) is day-to-day while Trey Lyles (ankle) remains out..
Phoenix Suns
The Suns enter this match on a four-game winning streak and 11 victories in their last 12 matches. With the win on Thursday versus the Kings, the Suns became the second team in the association to reach 40 victories.
They trail the Jazz by 1.5 games and lead the Pacific Division with a 2.5 game edge over the Clippers who are also seeded right behind Phoenix.
Chris Paul showed off his Point God skills with 13 points and 11 assists plus three rebounds, and three steals.
Punctuating his ability CP3 didn’t turn over the ball. He joined an elite group including Muggsy Bogues (46) and John Stockton (44) with his 43rd game of 10 plus assists and no turnovers.
Deandre Ayton led the way offensively with a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds while Devin Booker scored 23 points.
Mikal Bridges and Jevon Carter each offered 13 points as the other double-figure contributors.
