On Tuesday, January 12th the San Antonio Spurs will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in their first regular-season meeting of the 2020-21 campaign.
The Spurs own the all-time record with 96 wins in 174 matches. Last season the teams played four times with each squad winning twice.
San Antonio Spurs
The last four games for the Spurs was productive as San Antonio defeated both the Lakers and Clippers at Staples and split the two games versus the Timberwolves winning the first game in overtime.
Their three-game win streak ended in the second match versus Minny as they fell in a low scoring 88-96 match.
In the loss, LaMarcus Aldridge led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds. Lonnie Walker IV was the top scorer with 23 points while Patty Mills (18) and Dejounte Murray (11) were the only other double-figure contributors.
DeMar DeRozan wasn’t with the team as he left to deal with a family matter since he’s not listed on the injury report presumably he’ll be back for this match.
Drew Eubanks (health/safety protocols) is questionable for Tuesday. Derrick White is dealing with a fractured toe which will keep him off the court until February. Quinndary Weatherspoon (knee) is out indefinitely.
Oklahoma City Thunder
So much for tanking! This young Thunder team who virtually every analyst picked to finish dead last in the West enters the third week of gameplay sitting in the eighth seed. Perhaps the most impressive part of what they’ve accomplished is their 5-1 road record.
The most recent win offered great satisfaction for the Thunder youngsters as it came courtesy of a takedown of the team many expect will be the NBA Finals East representative. And versus the former face of the Thunder franchise — Kevin Durant.
In reality, the Thunder will likely still drop off the playoff ladder and use this early success to help bolster the trade offers for George Hill, Trevor Ariza, and possibly even Al Horford.
But in the interim, if there is one major takeaway of note it’s how a franchise with an established culture and identity can find success regardless of shifts in personnel. They drove that fact home via a 72-53 second-half scoring outburst and defensive lockdown of the Nets.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander offered KD a view of the heir apparent as he led his club with 31 points, six rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and a block.
Native New Yorker, Hamidou Diallo had a big weekend and capped it with 25 points, three rebounds, four assists, and four steals versus the Nets.
Al Horford (22), George Hill (14), Luguentz Dort (13), and Isaiah Roby (13) were the other double-figure contributors.
Ty Jerome (ankle) and Trevor Ariza (personal) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- SA are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games.
- Over is 7-2 in OKC last 9 home games.
- Home team is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings
Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
Ironically, all five wins for the Thunder have come on the road so they’re still seeking their first home victory. Likewise, the Spurs have a better road record (4-2) than they do at home (1-3)
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder +2.5
This Thunder squad has been the early season Cinderella team while the Spurs seem intent on moving forward with their younger stars. It’s a bit of a coin flip but I like the points for OKC.
