Spurs vs. Thunder Gameday
The Emirates NBA Cup semi-finals tip off on Saturday with the Western Conference taking center stage, to close the night featuring the San Antonio Spurs facing the OKC Thunder.
To advance to the semi-finals, the Spurs showcased their youthful athleticism to dispel the LA Lakers 132-119.
It was a case of ripping off the bandage as San Antonio drove the paint, pushed the ball in transition, and nailed shots from the perimeter, exposing the Lakers’ age and lack of mobility.
Stephon Castle, just back from injury, led the charge for the Spurs with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists while six other teammates scored in double figures.
Speaking of blow-outs, the OKC Thunder anhilated the Phoenix Suns, who gave it the good old college try, but without Devin Booker, were no match for the cream of this year’s NBA crop. OKC took control from the tip, winning the first quarter 38-23, and won every quarter on their way to a 138-89 romp where the starters weren’t necessary in the final frame.
MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued his three-quarter assault, scoring 28 points with eight assists before assuming a cheerleader role with his starter teammates.

Here is my Spurs Thunder free pick. It would be naive to assume the Spurs have no shot at winning, especially with the prospect of Victor Wembanyama returning.
If there is such a thing as a bad matchup for OKC, it would potentially be a deep, young, long, athletic team. San Antonio may be that squad, but they’ll have to face a defense more than capable of utilizing copious guards to slow the Spurs’ three guards, who are quick, talented, and lengthy.
OKC’s net differential of 17.4 is the largest ever recorded in any season in NBA history and most of that has been accumulated with copious starters sidelined. In fact, this is the first time all season Mark Daigneault will have his entire starting lineup healthy!
That said, I still wouldn’t hold your breath that OKC won’t rise to the challenge as they have against every opponent they’ve faced.
As I noted in the last preview, the only question isn’t if OKC will win, but rather how much they’ll win by.
And, like the quarters, again I’ll note this contest could be over quickly, but I’ll bank on the Spurs guards (and Wemby if he plays) giving the Thunder a test, but in the end it’ll be OKC winning and covering.
