San Antonio Spurs
A 4–4 record has San Antonio atop the Southwest Division, at least as of Saturday before the Spurs’ first of two in a row in Minnesota.
They just left Los Angeles, where they defeated both the Clippers and Lakers at the Staples Center.
Without juggling the roster too much, San Antonio has ushered in a youth movement in stark contrast to the last year or two.
DeJounte Murray is healthy once again and has taken on an increasingly bigger role in the offense.
Lonnie Walker, the first round pick in 2018, has gone from fringe rotational player for Head Coach Gregg Popovich to full-blown starter averaging a dozen points per game.
Keldon Johnson, the first round pick a year ago out of Kentucky, has also started every game in his second season and is averaging nearly 14 per game on terrific shooting splits.
Those three, to go along with DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge, have balanced the Spurs well.
And here’s some recognition for the 14-year NBA veteran Rudy Gay, who has averaged double-figures every season of his career and is doing it again here in 2021. He’s pouring in nearly 13 a game as a veteran bench presence.
Minnesota Timberwolves
So while San Antonio’s outlook looks up, Minnesota’s fortunes have been down ever since Karl-Anthony Towns re-aggrivated the wrist he hurt last season in the second game of the season.
The Wolves haven’t won since. They have lost six in a row and failed to cover in five of them, despite getting 8.5 points in five of them.
Towns is questionable to return on Saturday and, presumably, even more likely to return for this one, if he does not play on Saturday.
In the meantime, first overall pick Anthony Edwards is getting all the shots he can handle. He has come off the bench in every game of the season thus far but is averaging over 14 shot attempts per game.
That average includes 40 in the last two games combined. His percentages leave something to be desired but he’s done a good job for a rookie at limiting his turnovers to fewer than two a game.
The turnover numbers have gone up, however, as his shot attempts have. He’s lost possession at least three times in each of Minnesota’ last four games.
