Monday, December 13th the Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors meet for the second time this season. Toronto won the initial match 108-89.
The Raptors last played Friday in a 90-87 win versus the Knicks while the Kings played a back-to-back road set in Charlotte and Cleveland losing a 123-124 heart breaker to the Hornets and route 103-117 by the Cavaliers.
Sacramento Kings
The shine may already have dimmed on Kings interim head coach Alvin Gentry. Initially it looked like he had made all the right tweaks when the club won five of his first eight coached games.
Gentry appeared to have made the right tweaks specifically re-purposing a few malcontents – – Marvin Bagley III and Terence Davis specifically.
But how much has really changed? Under Luke Walton, the Kings started 5-5 – under Gentry’s first 10 the Kings are 5-5.
Sacramento doesn’t have the excuse of copious injuries to their core (or COVID absences) like many of their opponents do. In fact, the Kings have been one of the healthiest rosters this season.
As a young roster who spent over a decade drafting lottery picks this was supposed to be the year they took a step. In fact, what the Grizzlies are doing is how the Kings envisioned progressing this season.
Memphis didn’t have Dillon Brooks for 13 of the initial 17 games (plus the Lakers game). Ja Morant missed the last eight games, Brandon Clarke (5) and now Jaren Jackson could miss extended time with a sore knee.
Sacramento hasn’t suffered anywhere near that level of adversity but are 11th in the West while Memphis has vaulted to fourth. At some point the Kings have to take a step back and ask the hard questions on why they are perpetually stuck in neutral.
Richaun Holmes (eye) is out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
Two steps forward, one step back — that’s been the summation of the Raptors season but in fairness they’ve been hampered by injury all season and are a young team.
Rookie Scottie Barnes is proving Masai Ujiri and his scouting staff are in the master class at their positions. After being shafted out of winning the monthly rookie award Barnes has stepped his game up another level (players do care about these awards).
He was everywhere on the court versus the Knicks impacting all aspects of the game. His final stat line is what coaches covet from experienced players: 12 points, 15 rebounds (4OR), three assists, two steals, two blocks and a plus +14.
What isn’t on the stat sheet is how his critical rebound at game end (while being held), and hockey assist to VanVleet resulted in a wide-open Gary Trent 3-pointer essentially cementing the victory.
Three starters collected double-doubles: Barnes, Pascal Siakam (13 points, 12 rebounds), and Fred VanVleet (17 points, 11 assists) while Trent led scoring (24 points).
OG Anunoby (hip), Khem Birch (knee), Precious Achiuwa (shoulder/COVID), and Goran Dragic (personal) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Kings are 6-12 ATS in their last 18 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Sacramento’s last 9 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Toronto’s last 6 games.
- The Kings are 6-12 SU in their last 18 games.
Free Sacramento Kings vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Of the nine previous occasions the Kings played three games in four nights they are 3-6. Alternatively, the Raptors are injury riddled and haven’t demonstrated consistency.
The seven East teams seeded fifth through 11th (Raptors) are separated by three games (4.5 separates 3 – 11). Chicago, Miami, and Charlotte are all dealing with injuries/COVID while the Wizards are in free fall.
The Raptors recognize stringing together a win streak could vault them up the ladder — it’s just a matter of navigating these games shorthanded themselves but unlike the other squads the Raptors have dealt with that reality all season.
Based solely on health this should be a win for the Kings but given the opportunity to make up ground I think Nick Nurse motivates his club to keep up the strong defense and pull out a close victory.
