Friday, December 10th, finds the Sacramento Kings and Charlotte Hornets tipping off for the second time this season. In the initial match on November 5th, the Kings routed the Hornets 140-110.
Both teams played on Wednesday with the Kings winning the track meet versus the Magic 142-130 while the Hornets lost for the second consecutive game to the 76ers,
Last season, the squads played twice and split the matches each winning on the other team’s home court. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 35 of their 63 matches.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings’ winning streak is now up to three games in a row following the victory versus the Magic. It wasn’t a game that featured much defense but if you’re a fan of offense then check it out on League Pass.
Sacramento exposed the Clippers this past week winning the home and home series. The reversal of the team’s fortunes is likely due to a few key facts.
When teams repeatedly lose or don’t experience success over an extended period it’s not unusual for players to turn a deaf ear to the coach so when a new bench boss is in charge the players are open to hearing a new voice and fresh ideas.
The offensive burst is no surprise as Sacramento demonstrated that prowess under Walton although Alvin Gentry is implementing little tweaks making them more efficient.
The biggest change is personnel-based as certain players were in Luke Walton’s dog house and have been freed by Gentry. The most obvious is Marvin Bagley although opportunities for Terence Davis increased under Gentry. too.
In the most recent victory, seven Kings scored in double-figures. De’Aaron Fox was the top scorer with 33 points while Tyrese Haliburton (18 points, 11 assists) and Tristan Thompson (14 points, 10 rebounds) each delivered double-doubles. .
Davion Mitchell (18), Davis (16), Harrison Barnes (16), and Bagley (12) were the other double-figure scorers. Unfortunately, Richaun Holmes took an errant Mo Bamba swat to his face cutting the same eye he previously injured so he’ll miss a few days as it heals.
Charlotte Hornets
For the second consecutive match, the Hornets fell to the 76ers but James Borrego should be credited for getting his shorthanded squad to keep both games close.
It’s one thing to be missing four players in health and safety protocols but to lose your starting backcourt is tough especially when LaMelo Ball runs so much of the Hornets’ offense.
Although they’ve lost five of their last six matches they are competing (at least on one end of the floor). Monday went to overtime and Wednesday was a four point loss.
Embiid took 19 free throws while the entire Hornets team took 21.
Gordon Hayward led the effort for Charlotte with 31 points five rebounds, seven assists, a steal, and a block. Kelly Oubre produced a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds while Miles Bridges scored 20 points plus five rebounds, and five assists.
LaMelo Ball, Mason Plumlee, Terry Rozier, Ish Smith and Jalen McDaniels are all out due to COVID-19.
