Friday, November 25th, the Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics face each other for the first of two scheduled meetings this season. Sacramento will host on March 21st.
Both teams last played Wednesday with the Kings losing 106-115 to the Hawks while the Celtics defeated the Mavericks 125-112.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Celtics sweeping the regular season series. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Kings in 188 of their 307 matches.
Sacramento Kings
The winning streak ended in Atlanta with Sacramento facing a team who utilizes similar schemes.
Just as the Kings have become the Cinderella feel-good team of this campaign, they’re also rapidly becoming the most reliable ATS betting option where they are 12-5 on the season.
The loss drops them to fifth, a half-game back of the Jazz, Pelicans, and Nuggets and a game out of first (Suns). Although they’re winning, the end of the Grizzlies’ game highlights why Sacramento needs to improve defensively.
They can’t afford to be coughing up the ball late if they aren’t able to stop the opposition. I’m not suggesting they need to vault to the top five but Mike Brown has got to get them aiming higher (and internally wish for 15th).
Or the ability to play five good minutes of defense in clutch time. That action alone could shift the Kings to a bonafide home-court seed.
Offensively, the Kings are making a mark as one of the best on that side of the hardwood moving onto the top ladder rung scoring 120.0 points per game.
Similarly, Sacramento is performing above average with their proficiency posting the best field goal percentage of 49.6% while shooting 37.3% from the perimeter tied with the 76ers in ninth.
As stellar as the Kings have functioned on offense they are equally as abysmal defensively as evidenced by their 26th rank for opponent scoring per game (116.8).
Sacramento ranks 29th in both opponent field goal (49.5%) and perimeter (38.3%) percentage efficiency.
The Kings have no injuries to report.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics sit atop the East followed by eight teams with winning or .500 records. Boston’s lead over these clubs is between 1.5 and 5 games while the other eight are separated by 3.5 games.
After games on Friday, they’ll all have played between 18 or 19 games closing in on that 20-game mark when typically a team has established its identity including strengths and weaknesses.
This season presents an oddity given the plethora of teams hovering around the .500 mark and in a recent deep dive of the schedule I’ve noticed major variances.
The Celtics have played a heavier road schedule and three back-to-back sets, with a fairly even split of teams over and under .500, no baseball sets, home, and home series, or rest disadvantages.
The latter will change moving forward as Boston will play nine matches with the rest disadvantage versus six with the advantage, four baseball sets, and eight back-to-back sets.
Boston boasts the second-best offensive production scoring 119.7 points per game while they are tied for fifth (Cavaliers) in field goal percentage (48.7%) and third for perimeter percentage (39.5%).
They allow 113.4 opponent points ranked 14th and are tied for 16th with the Hornets for opponent field goal percentage (46.7%) and 18th for perimeter (36.0%) percentage.
JD Davison (ankle) is questionable for Friday. Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Sacramento is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games.
- Boston is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The Kings are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against Boston.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Boston’s last 5 games at home.
Free Sacramento Kings vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
The two best offenses in the association take aim at one another, but the Kings will need to dig deep and summon their defensive chops to have a shot. It’s far more likely they begin a losing streak with the Celtics demonstrating how to effectively balance two-way play to garner wins.
The matchups are compelling, presenting some intriguing one-on-one challenges. Who will Mike Brown tap to limit Tatum and Brown versus Al Horford needing to slow Sabonis and presumably Smart will be tasked with the Fox assignment.
Boston is still ramping up their defensive effort but aren’t that far removed from owning the best defense in the NBA so I like them to win but not by enough points to cover.
