Monday, January 25th finds the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers playing the second game of a back-to-back set both occurring at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Raptors won the initial game on Sunday 107-102.
Nick Nurse and Nate Bjorkgren coached against each other for the first time as NBA head coaches but they’ve been in this position before in the G-League. Bjorkgren served as an assistant to Nurse the last two seasons.
The Pacers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 49 wins in 93 meetings. Last season, the clubs played four times with the Raptors winning three of the four contests in the regular-season series.
Toronto Raptors
After starting the season 1-6 the Raptors have won six of their past nine games and are 4-1 in the last five.
They entered Sunday with the late scratch of Pascal Siakam (groin/knee) and were also missing Kyle Lowry (foot).
OG Anunoby who played his college ball in Indiana was the star of the night. The two-way forward scored a season-high 30 points via a versatile offensive mix adding eight rebounds, five steals, and a block.
Yet, it was his defense on Domantas Sabonis that was arguably more impressive.
Aron Baynes is also getting more run of late as he seems to be feeling more comfortable in the complicated Raptors defensive system.
Yuta Watanabe and Stanley Johnson aren’t names that will jump of the box score but both excelled defensively and were critical to the victory.
Fred VanVleet also delivered two-way excellence with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block while being the primary defender on Malcolm Brogdon.
Norman Powell (20), Chris Boucher (12), and Baynes (12) were the other double-figure scorers.
Lowry and Siakam are questionable for Monday while Patrick McCaw (knee) remains out.
Indiana Pacers
The Pacers battled to cut a 13 point deficit taking the lead in the fourth quarter but weren’t able to make the plays down the stretch.
In contrast to the Raptors who’ve won five of their last six games, the Pacers are struggling having lost three of the past four games.
While Sabonis still registered his 16th consecutive double-double (10 points, 19 rebounds, and five assists) eight of his points came at the line as he shot 1 of 10.
Brogdon also struggled shooting 5 of 22 for 12 points. Despite a broken bone in his hand Myles Turner led the way with 25 points, four rebounds, three steals, and six blocks.
Justin Holiday (16), Doug McDermott (13), and Jeremy Lamb (13) were the other double-digit contributors.
TJ Warren (foot surgery), and LeVert (kidney) are out indefinitely.
