Sunday, January 24th finds the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers playing their first game of the 2020-21 season. It also marks the first time former Raptors assistant and friend of Nick Nurse will face each other as head coaches in the NBA.
The Pacers hold the all-time record between the clubs with 49 wins in 92 meetings. Last season, the clubs played four times with the Raptors winning three of the four contests in the regular-season series.
Toronto Raptors
Since getting out to a poor 1-6 start this season the Raptors have since recorded a 5-3 record with two of those losses by a single point versus the Warriors and Blazers in a back-to-back set.
The other loss in that series occurred on Wednesday night versus the shorthanded Heat. Following that game head coach, Nick Nurse made it clear how disappointed he was by the effort and several Raptors players noted they were embarrassed.
Despite not having Kyle Lowry who is nursing a foot injury and is Toronto’s heart and soul, Nurse’s message came through loud and clear. The win was one of the most complete two-way efforts of the season.
Toronto built a double-digit lead but this time when the opponent erased the deficit the Raptors responded leading with their defensive effort and rebuilt the lead.
Pascal Siakam was questionable to play after injuring his groin in an awkward fall but suited up and delivered a double-double of 15 points with 14 rebounds (five offensive boards), plus five assists.
OG Anunoby was a standout with 21 points shooting 8 of 12 and 5 of 6 from deep plus four rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
Norman Powell (23), Fred VanVleet (13), and Terence Davis (12) were the other double-figure contributors while Aron Baynes had his best game primarily on the defensive end with two steals and two blocks plus six boards.
Lowry (foot) is questionable while Patrick McCaw (knee) remains out.
Indiana Pacers
In contrast to Toronto, the Pacers jumped out to a 6-2 season start but are 3-4 in the last seven including their most recent overtime win versus the Magic.
The worst losses of the Pacers season occurred versus the Clippers and Mavericks. The common denominator in the defeats was the absence of Myles Turner.
He returned to play the Magic despite knowing he has a broken bone in his hand and made an immediate impact registering 22 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks while shooting 3 of 6 from deep.
Malcolm Brogdon led the scoring with 23 points including the go-ahead 3-pointer. Domantas Sabonis his 15th consecutive double-double (18 points, 11 rebounds) and had nine assists.
In his second game back Jeremy Lamb was solid with 22 points and seven rebounds while Doug McDermott added 13 points. o find a wrap of some sort that would allow him to play while healing.
TJ Warren (foot surgery), and LeVert (kidney) are out indefinitely.
