Monday, February 22nd finds the Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns playing in their first meeting this season. Entering play this weekend both teams sported an 18-10 record but a win by the Suns coupled with a loss by the Blazers resulted in Phoenix pulling ahead into the fourth spot in the West.
If the playoffs started today these squads would be first-round opponents and that fact puts more onus on this game with both teams cognizant of placement and home-court advantage.
The Suns hold the all-time record between the clubs with 122 wins in 230 meetings. Last season, the clubs played four times splitting the series with two wins each.
Portland Trail Blazers
Damian Lillard will get added to the All-Star Game when the reserves are announced Monday night. There was never any doubt he’d make the team but whether he’d be starting.
His effort on Saturday served as a reminder as he registered 35 points, 12 assists, six rebounds, a steal, and hit seven 3-pointers.
Granted it took 30 shots to amass those points and unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for the Blazers to net the victory as they fell 111-118 to the Wizards and saw their six-game win streak come to an end.
All five starters scored in double figures and three collected double-doubles with Enes Kanter (19 points, 13 rebounds) and Robert Covington (11 points, 11 rebounds) joining Lillard.
Gary Trent Jr. and Derrick Jones Jr. scored 16 and 11 respectively.
Harry Giles (calf) missed the last four games and is listed as day-to-day. CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic have missed 17 and 18 games respectively. During this stretch, Portland is 10-6 keeping them afloat in the West.
CJ should be close to returning while Nurkic won’t be back until mid-March. Zach Collins (medial malleolus stress fracture to his ankle) remains out with no timetable for return.
Phoenix Suns
Chris Paul won’t be an automatic reserve player selection by the coaches to play in the All-Star Game but he’ll certainly be among the shortlist of considerations.
His effect in Phoenix is palpable as the Suns enter play this week having won 11 of their last 13 games. The two losses included a blow-out by the Pelicans (101-123) and the loss to the Nets where they gave up a huge lead.
The most recent game featured a 128-97 shellacking of the Grizzlies in a match that allowed coach Monty Williams to ride his bench for major minutes and collect 57 points.
Starters Devin Booker (27), Mikal Bridges (19), Chris Paul (16) built the lead via a 28-15 and 37-19 first and second-quarter performance. The reserves played even with the Grizz to close the match with Dario Saric and Cameron Payne ech scoring 19 points.
No injuries to report.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Blazers are 8-2 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Suns are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Sitting fourth (Suns) and fifth (Blazers) in the West these squads reach that mark via very different circumstances.
Phoenix has no injuries and is vying to reach the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons. Conversely, the Blazers core is decimated by injury have made seven consecutive postseason appearances, and added depth to make a run at the title.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Blazers +6.5
With a healthier team, deeper bench, and third-ranked perimeter defense it favors the Suns but you never know what Dame has up his sleeve. I’ll take the points but give the win to the Suns.
