Portland Trail Blazers
Portland lost its first game back from the break to Phoenix on Thursday, 127–121.
Devin Booker led all scorers with 35. Damian Lillard paced his team with 30. Carmelo Anthony and newly-crowned Slam Dunk Champion Anfernee Simons each had double-figures off the bench.
The loss dropped Portland back into a tie with Denver for fifth-place in the Western Conference.
CJ McCollum has not played since January 16 after breaking his foot. Last Friday, however, the Trail Blazers announced he had been cleared for contact in practice and would be re-evaluated sometime next week.
That evaluation has not happened yet, or at least has not been reported publicly. It would appear McCollum’s return is near but certainly won’t be in time for this one.
Portland offered a similar update on Jusuf Nurkic, who broke his wrist two days earlier than McCollum’s break. He is set for a re-evaluation this week, too, but certainly won’t play here.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Interim Head Coach Chris Finch earned his first career victory on Thursday with a 135–105 blowout of the Pelicans.
Finch had lost his first five games since taking over for former Head Coach Ryan Saunders in the final week of February.
The Timberwolves trailed the Pelicans by seven at the end of the first quarter in New Orleans Thursday but stormed back to win the second and third quarters by a combined 30 points.
Jaylen Nowell played his finest game as a pro and set new career-highs in minutes (28), points (28), and assists (6). He finished 11-for-13 from the field, including 6-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Jaden McDaniels went 8-of-9 for 20 points off the bench and Naz Reid 7-of-9 for 15.

According to Covers.com, three-quarters of the action is on Portland.
The number has pumped up to -5 at both FanDuel and BetAmerica but held steady across most boards.
Minnesota has the advantage of some young players feeling some extra confidence. Plus, Karl-Anthony Towns’ athleticism against Enes Kanter.
Look for Towns to be the best player on the floor in this particular matchup and for Minnesota to make it two in a row coming out of the break.
