Sunday, December 19th finds the Portland Trail Blazers facing the Memphis Grizzlies for the second time this season. In the initial meeting on October 27th, the Blazers won 116-96.
The teams will play once more this season with the Grizzlies hosting on February 16th.
In an interesting scheduling oddity, the clubs are playing a home and home series this week each playing a game in-between on Friday. The Blazers lost 116-125 to the Hornets while the Grizzlies beat the Kings 124-105.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies taking two of the three contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 53 of their 95 matches
Portland Trail Blazers
The seven-game losing streak is mercifully over and along with it, Damian Lillard had his best performance of the season. Recently Lillard sat out some games to rest the tendinopathy in his abdominal muscles and took a shot of cortisol to help with the paint.
Although he’s looked better since returning, on Friday he resembled the sniper everyone has become accustomed to seeing hit logo 3-pointers and clutch time shots.
Lillard scored a season-best 43 points on 12 of 18 from the field, 6 of 11 from the perimeter, and 13 of 14 from the line. He added eight assists, four rebounds, and a steal.
Ben McLemore scored 28 points drilling eight of his 13 perimeter attempts while Norman Powell scored 14 points with five assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
Jusuf Nurkic and Larry Nance Jr. both started in the match and each collected 10 points as the other double-figure scorers.
Although the Blazers are one of the few teams not affected by COVID they have four players on the injured list including Tony Snell who missed Friday’s match for personal reasons.
Cody Zeller (quad), Dennis Smith Jr. (knee), and CJ McCollum (lung) were out as well with CJ missing his sixth consecutive game after puncturing his lung.
Memphis Grizzlies
With Ja Morant (knee/quarantine) and Brandon Clarke (knee) missing their 11th and eighth consecutive games the Grizzlies continued to find a way to win erasing a double-digit deficit to capture the win for the seventh time this season.
The interim Grizzlies Big 3 continue to lead the way with Desmond Bane recording a team-high 24 points, Dillon Brooks offering 23 points plus six rebounds (3 OR), two assists, and a steal while Jaren Jackson Jr. served up 21 points, six rebounds, two assists, a steal, and two blocks.
Steven Adams didn’t hit double-digit scoring (five points) but was integral to the win grabbing 12 rebounds (5 OR) plus four assists, and a steal. De’Anthony Melton (19) and Tyus Jones (14) were the other double-figure contributors.
The Grizzlies dominated the paint outscoring Sacramento 60 to 36.
Zaire Williams (ankle) and Santi Aldama (calf) are questionable while Sam Merrill (ankle) is out indefinitely and Morant and Clarke remain sidelined.
