Tuesday, November 9th, finds the Portland Trail Blazers facing the LA Clippers in their third meeting already this season.
The clubs split the prior games each via blowout performances. LA won the first meeting on October 25th 116-86 while the Blazers got quick revenge on October 29th pummeling the Clippers 111-92.
The Blazers last played Saturday in an easy 105-90 win versus the Lakers while the Clippers played Sunday defeating the Hornets 120-106.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Clippers sweeping all the regular-season series. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 148 of their 233 matches.
Portland Trail Blazers
While Chauncey Billups deserves time to get this Blazers team functioning how he wants and Damian Lillard has experienced a slow start to the season this team is already my roller coaster squad.
They appeared to be making strides defensively through the first week and a half but in their losses, there have been absolute defensive breakdowns either resulting in far too many wide-open 3-pointers, zero transition defense, or wide-open lanes through the paint to the rim.
The problem is Portland is switch-happy to the point they are switching unnecessarily. Their transition defense comes and goes strictly based on energy and commitment.
And yet, through three weeks they rank 14th defensively and the individual defensive category improvements probably have Billups pretty pleased.
To wit, Portland holds opponents to 43 .4 points in the paint (ranks 8th), 11.9 on the fast break (ranks 9th), 10.7 second-chance points (ranks 5th). Comparative to last season they ranked 14th, 24th, and 24th respectively.
Still, there remain issues for this team just fundamentally based on their roster construction. They utilize three smallish guards and don’t have much to backup Jusuf Nurkic or much wing assistance for Robert Covington.
I’m nitpicking a bit but aside from Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little, Billups doesn’t have much depth and considering they have the ninth-largest NBA salary ($142,818,883) that’s concerning.
LA Clippers
Wipe away the 1-4 start to the season and the Clippers look much more like the club most expected entering this season. With another victory on Sunday, they move to 5-4 and are on a four-game win streak.
That they’ve beaten the Thunder, Wolves (twice), and the Hornets shouldn’t take away from their noticeable improvement over the last week. Prior to the Wolves losing both matches they seemed ready to take a step and the Hornets started the season on fire.
LA will take the wins and use it to stoke their momentum with games versus the Blazers, Heat, and Bulls in three of their next four bolstered by yet another match versus the Wolves.
On Sunday, the Clippers utilized balanced scoring with five players registering between 14 and 20 points – the latter courtesy of Paul George. who added nine rebounds plus eight assists although he did cough up the ball eight times as well.
Ivica Zubac (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Terrence Mann (17 points, 10 rebounds) offered double-double contributions. The turning point was the fourth quarter in a back and forth game that witnessed LA score 31 points and hold Charlotte to 19 in capturing the 120-106 win.
More good news for the Clippers as Serge Ibaka returned from offseason back surgery. He missed 30 games at the end of last season playing the last two games of 2020-21 and first two playoff games before being shut down.
Morris Sr. (knee), and Jason Preston (foot) are questionable for Tuesday.
