Wednesday, December 8th, finds the Portland Trail Blazers playing the Golden State Warriors for the second time this season. The Warriors won the initial meeting on November 26th 118-103.
Both teams played Monday with the Blazers losing 90-102 to the Clippers while the Warriors collected their 20th win of the season courtesy of the Magic.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers winning two of the three contests. The Blazers have won 129 of the 236 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Portland Trail Blazers
For years the Blazers boasted their star backcourt of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum always with some rising young talent coming up behind them usually at shooting guard or small forward.
Yet the depth at the guard and wing positions this year, in particular, has been challenged by injury as their starting backcourt plus Norman Powell, Anfernee Simons, and Nassir Little have all missed time due to injury.
After consecutive losses of 31 and 28 points to the Spurs and Celtics, head coach Chauncey Billups called out his team for their missing effort.
Making matters worse only Powell from the above quintet was available to play Monday and Ben McLemore had to leave eight minutes in. Now the news McCollum suffered a collapsed lung from the injury versus Boston which will undoubtedly keep him out a while.
That relegated Dennis Smith Jr. and Tony Snell into the starting rotation and in spite of being severely shorthanded, it was a two-point game with 2:30 remaining.
The Blazers lost for the sixth time in seven matches but Billups was thrilled with his squad’s effort. Both Jusuf Nurkic (31) and Powell (29) delivered season bests.
McCollum (collapsed lung), Simons (ankle), and Little (ankle) are all questionable for Wednesday and presumably so is McLemore while Lillard (abdominal) is out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
Stephen Curry has long coveted one personal record – the all-time 3-point record. Ray Allen is the only one left for him to catch with 2,973 career 3-pointers.
Curry’s shaved the target down with seven made 3-pointers on Monday pushing him to 2,958 regular-season 3-pointers meaning he needs 15 to tie Allen and 16 more deep balls to break the record.
Since the Warriors will be heading out on the road and know the Blazers are shorthanded it’s not surprising Curry said he might go for the record on Wednesday.
In the win Monday, the superstar was putting up shots from the logo, off double-screens, step backs, you name it the ball was blistering through the Chase Center on Monday.
And yet it was a teammate who stole the 3-point spotlight in the 126-95 victory. Andrew Wiggins nailed a career-high eight (of 10) 3-pointers contributing to his line of 28 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Curry finished with 31 points, plus eight assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Jordan Poole (12) and Nemanja Bjelcia (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Although Klay Thompson has been getting in practice with the Santa Cruz Warriors he won’t travel with the team on their upcoming five-game road trip electing to continue rehabbing and building toward his return.
He’s long intimated he wanted to return by or before Christmas so staying back to focus on conditioning makes sense. Andre Iguodala has missed the last 10 games with right knee soreness and is out Wednesday but the team is hopeful he’ll play during the trip.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Warriors are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Warriors are 5-4-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
Even if Lillard, Little, and Simons play the Warriors’ depth is too much to counter. Plus you know Steph’s teammates will be dialed in for him to try to get the record at the Chase Center instead of on the road.
A huge spread to cover and it’s Dame’s home town but I’m more convinced the Dubs will rally around Steph than I am the undermanned Blazers will live up to Billups’ desires for effort.
