Sunday, November 14th finds the Portland Trail Blazers tipping off versus the Denver Nuggets in their first meeting of the season.
Both clubs played on Friday with the Blazers beating the Rockets 104-92 while the Nuggets garnered an easy 105-96 victory versus the Hawks.
The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 100 of their 187 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with the Nuggets taking two of the three contests.
Portland Trail Blazers
Something is definitely amiss with Damian Lillard as his shooting struggles continued.
Although he shot better from deep (4 of 9) his overall field goals were still not in line with his typical prowess with him going 6 of 16 from the field.
Comparing his production to last season offers a reason for concern. In 2020-21 Lillard offered 28.8 points on 45.1 percent from the field while drilling 4.1 long balls on 10.5 attempts with a 39.1 percent efficiency.
This season he’s shooting 38 percent from the field while making fewer 3-point attempts (9.5) shooting with 26.8 percent efficiency. Even his free throw form is showing a decline (92.8% down to 84.1%) down by almost 10 percent.
Dame said early in the season it wasn’t anything to worry about and pointed to previous shooting slumps and how he snapped out of them. But as the season nears the quarter pole with no sign of correcting it’s concerning.
Consider the sobering fact that in 13 matches Lillard has equaled (or bettered) his 3-point efficiency of last season on just three occasions. Moreover, his effective field goal percentage is down over 10 percent.
Lillard is one of the guards who’ve complained about the new officiating (Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young), and with that group all being on the smaller side it begs the question: is it just harder for these guards now that they’re getting defended with less restriction?
Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic was back from serving a one-game suspension for his retaliatory shot to the back of Miami forward Markieff Morris. The time off must have fueled the reigning MVP – or perhaps he was annoyed to lose over $200k for his actions.
Whatever the motivation, Jokic delivered his second triple-double this season of 22 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists the 59th of his career. That ties him for eighth all-time with another famous big man Larry Bird.
Five Nuggets scored in double-figures including Aaron Gordon (23), Jeff Green (16), Bones Hyland (15), and PJ Dozier (12).
The rookie Hyland also offered up six rebounds, four assists, and three long balls in 21 minutes. Hyland is quickly becoming a favorite of head coach Michael Malone who has increased his playing time as the season progresses.
We’ll have to keep an eye on how this situation progresses as Franco Campazzo was a coach’s decision DNP so perhaps Malone has already shifted to the rookie as the backup.
Michael Porter Jr. has missed the last three games due to his back flaring up and isn’t expected back for this match or anytime soon. Jamal Murray (ACL) and Vlatko Cancar (hip) are both out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nuggets are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Blazers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Portland Trail Blazers vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
Things won’t get any easier for Lillard as the Nuggets offer the sixth-best perimeter defense. Nor will they have an easy time emulating their ability to score on second chances as the Nuggets allow the third-fewest in that area.
Denver will be shorthanded again, but their defense has proven robust and that doesn’t bode well for Portland and Lillard.
The under bet is also appealing
