Friday, December 30th, the Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors meet for the first of two scheduled matches this season. Phoenix will host the second meeting on January 30th.
Phoenix completed their back-to-back set Wednesday getting pummelled 102-127 by the Wizards while the Raptors are in a current back-to-back set having lost 106-119 to the Grizzlies on Thursday.
Last season the clubs played twice with the teams splitting the two contests. The Suns hold the all-time record with 32 wins in 51 matches versus the Suns.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Thursday evening, December 29th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Friday, December 30th.
Phoenix Suns
The last time the Suns played in Toronto Devin Booker got into a big fight — with the Raptors mascot!
It was comical but annoying because Toronto was one of the few teams who didn’t have any spectators so the Raptor was trying to play the role fans do of distracting Booker at the charity stripe.
Booker complained to the ref who made the Raptor move which is pretty weird because you couldn’t get fans to stop doing that so why stop the only one in the building?
They kibitzed back and forth on social media so they’ll likely interact on Friday but Booker, unfortunately, won’t be playing as the team updated he’ll be out for a month with this groin injury.
Opponents score 111.6 points ranking 10th while they limit their foes’ shooting to 47.0% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 16th and 24th respectively.
After the recent swoon, they are averaging 115.5 points per game which rank eighth, holding opponents to 47.0% from the field and 37.8% from the perimeter ranking 15th and seventh respectively.
Cameron Payne (foot), and Landry Shamet (Achilles) are questionable. Booker (groin), Jae Crowder (trade request), and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out.
Toronto Raptors
Diving into the key issues of this season invariably ends up landing on health because there hasn’t been an opportunity to develop chemistry and rhythm.
Precious Achiuwa and Otto Porter Jr. are above-average 3-point shooters but have missed 23 and 27 of the 35 games the Raps have played. Others are playing through injuries so it’s not surprising the perimeter shooting has been so problematic.
On offense, the Raptors score 111.4 points per game (21st) shooting 45.2% from the field (26th) and 32.8% from deep (29th). Defensively, the Raptors allow 111.2 opponent points per game ranking (7th) while shooting 48.9% (29th) from the field and 35.9% (16th).
Precious Achiuwa is listed as questionable and participated in practice Wednesday so could return in this match, while Fred VanVleet sat Thursday with back spasms and is questionable for Friday. Otto Porter Jr. (foot) remains out.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Although the teams are dealing with injuries to core players it’s impacted the Raptors more so, with Nick Nurse already using 18 different starting lineups through 35 games.
Still, the see-saw of a solid two-way club versus a team that looks 180 degrees different the next night is perplexing.
Phoenix has managed to keep their head above water but the Raptors have struggled trying to get everyone in rhythm simultaneously which begs the question if they’ll figure it out before February 9th and if they don’t what that could mean for this iteration of the team.
Picking which version of the Raptors will show up on any given night is almost comical. Realistically, they have the rest disadvantage and Siakam should be the best player on the floor which theoretically should equate to a win.
Conversely, the Suns have the rest advantage and because of their record and reputation will likely also have the whistle.
Tough one to call but since the spread is under three I’ll take the Raps to cover.
