A longtime Western Conference pincushion travels east to Texas to take on another Southwest Division foe in San Antonio. The weird thing is, both teams are afterthoughts so far in 2018-19, despite San Antonio’s reputation of being one of the class organizations in the NBA for as long as anyone can remember. Even given the Spurs’ recent struggles, the Phoenix Suns should be low-hanging fruit.
Phoenix has only one four measly games being a third of the way through the season, and the Suns are already gunning for a lottery pick for next year’s Draft. It should be a useful for for San Anton’ to achieve .500 basketball again on Tuesday night.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns are, well, lousy. They have the worst record in the NBA and have lost their last eight straight ballgames. They have an intriguing talent in Devin Booker, a nice pure scorer who is putting up 23.5 PPG to go with nearly seven assists, but that’s where the sunshine ends, ironically, in one of the sunniest places in America.

The Los Angeles Lakers are apparently looking to acquire Suns veteran Trevor Ariza, which he likely welcomes as it’s a chance to flee the desert – not just of vegetation (thank you Arizona), but of wins. Ariza will have a chance at playoff basketball if he gets traded. This is still a full-on rebuild for the Suns.
To be fair, the Suns might have a piece in local big man DeAndre Ayton. The former Arizona Wildcat is putting up a double-double – nearly 16 points per to go with 10+ rebounds – and is getting around the court OK with a huge 7’1, 250 lb frame. Ayton is just 20, so his best ball will be ahead of him. Elsewhere, the search is on for guys that can compete and start on this roster. Booker can’t do it all himself.

Surprisingly, small forward T.J. Warren, who is Phoenix’s second-leading scorer, will play on Monday and (likely) Tuesday nights after coming back from an ankle injury, but expect his minutes to be limited by rookie head coach Igor Koskokov.
San Antonio Spurs
Speaking comparatively to Tuesday night’s opponent, the situation in San Antonio looks like a dream, but this is an NBA franchise with very high expectations, and this season has been a complete disappointment thus far. Legendary head coach Gregg Popovich and his front office (let’s face it, Pop probably calls most of the shots) decided to swap superstars in the off-season, when they sent Kawhi Leonard to Toronto in exchange for longtime Raptor DeMar DeRozan. ‘DDR’ has been a great scorer for the Texans, but the Spurs are still lacking a je ne sais quoi on the team to date.
Fellow star LaMarcus Aldridge hasn’t been good enough for the Spurs. The big man is shooting under 46% from the floor and is putting up a fairly pedestrian 18.2 PPG and under 10 boards per. For the big that is supposed to be the straw that stirs the drink, it ain’t good enough. DeRozan has picked up where he left off north of the border, but fellow supposed star PG Patty Mills has also been lacklustre.

It may simply be time for Pop, R.C. Buford and all the powers that be to realize that this roster has gotten the maximium mileage it can yield as currently constituted. It’s been a real nice run, the Spurs have been the Detroit Red Wings or the New England Patriots of their league, but a complete overhaul may not be far off. In the meantime, they can stomp the Suns, especially because Phoenix actually beat the Spurs earlier in the season.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
The home side Spurs should be looking to exact a price after embarassingly losing to the worst team in the league early in the year. Being one of Phoenix’s only four wins is rather humiliating for the dynastic San Antonio squad. They are capable of beating the Suns and they should, with little trouble.
This game has blowout potential with the Spurs getting an early lead and maintaining it throughout. DeRozan should go off for a big one and Aldridge possesses the veteran guile to make a mockery of young Ayton in the low block. If the Spurs move the ball around like they’ve been famous for doing, they should be home and dry early in the proceedings.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Spurs -11.0
The home team should nab a double-digit win against the basement-dwelling Suns in the AT&T Center in the Lone Star State.
