Tuesday, December 14th finds the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers tipping off in their third meeting of the 2021-22 season. Each team has won once with the Blazers taking the October 23rd match, 134-105, and the Suns winning on November 10th 119-109.
They’ll play once more this season at Phoenix on March 2nd. The Suns are playing a back-to-back set having lost 95-111 to the Clippers on Monday while the Blazers have the rest advantage last playing Sunday in a 116-111 loss to the Wolves.
The Suns hold the all-time record between the clubs with 126 wins in 235 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times with Phoenix sweeping the regular-season series.
Phoenix Suns
When Philly beat the Warriors on the weekend Phoenix moved to the top for the standings but fall back to second again following the loss to the Clippers coupled with the Dubs win versus the Pacers.
Phoenix will be tested in the coming week especially if Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton remain out as they represent two of the Suns’ Big 3.
Chris Paul showed the first signs of the load he’s been carrying on Monday in the loss as he shot 4 of 14 collecting nine points, eight assists, two rebounds, and three steals but was a minus -14.
JaVale McGee seamlessly fits into Deandre Ayton’s role collecting another double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Mikal Bridges scored 16 while the two Cameron’s (Payne and Johnson) scored 17 each off the bench.
In fairness, even if the Clippers were shorthanded as well as noted in my preview if LA couldn’t get up for the team that knocked them out of the playoffs then there is no such thing as motivation.
It’s hard to look at a loss by either the Suns or Warriors negatively given they are two of the four teams who haven’t hit double-digit losses this season (Jazz, Nets).
Ayton (illness) and Jalen Smith (illness) are questionable for Tuesday while Devin Booker (hamstring), Frank Kaminsky (knee), Abdel Nader (knee), and Dario Saric (knee) are all out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
Damian Lillard returned on Sunday after missing five games but it didn’t help the Blazers whose losing streak hit five in a row and eight of their last nine matches.
Rumors the Blazers are shopping Robert Covington and Jusuf Nurkic is leading to plenty of speculation about where the Blazers are headed. In order to keep Lillard happy they need to add depth and talent to the team so talk of trades makes the situation tricky at best.
With so much time off the court, it wasn’t surprising Lillard was rusty shooting 5 of 17 from the field and 3 of 14 from the perimeter but still managed to collect a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds plus six assists.
The Blazers got some major help from the bench with Anfernee Simons scoring a season-high 26 points and Ben McLemore adding 15 all via 3-pointers. Norman Powell also scored 15 while Nassir Little added 10.
Adding a bit of relevance to the rumors of Covington being on the trade block coach Chauncey Billups inserted Larry Nance into the starting lineup with him grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring eight points.
Covington also responded by filling up the stat sheet with three points, five rebounds, three assists, five steals and four blocks.
CJ McCollum (lungs) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:

- Over/Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The last time Phoenix lost two games in a row it was October 27th in the third/fourth games of the season and the Blazers were one of those teams.
Both teams are limping into this match but the question is whether Lillard can be the difference as the top player on the court. I’m more convinced CP3 will get his team refocused to get back on track.
