Sunday, May 2nd the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder play for the third and final time this season. Each squad has a victory in the books with the Thunder winning the January 27th match 102-97 while the Suns won the April 2nd match in a 140-103 thumping.
It’s an opposite end of the spectrum contest with the top team in the West taking on one of the bottom three. Adding insult to injury the Thunder are getting to witness the Suns flourish with former captain Chris Paul leading the Suns this season after trading him this offseason to begin their rebuild.
The Sun holds the all-time record between the squads with 129 victories in 244 meetings. Last season the teams played three times with the Thunder having the advantage winning two of the three contests.
Phoenix Suns
The last time these teams met the Suns routed the Thunder with six players reaching double-figure scoring.
In that match, Devin Booker led the way with 32 points while former Thunder captain Chris Paul posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 assists. As it turns out 17 was the lucky number that day as Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson also scored 17 points.
Although the injury report doesn’t list either Chris Paul or Devin Booker being out it feels like a wasted opportunity by the Suns to rest their superstars down the stretch.
Perhaps Monty Wiliams will simply adjust in the game to not overtax his stars, or maybe he is remembering what happened earlier in the season when the Thunder shocked the Suns with that narrow defeat.
Cameron Payne (knee) is questionable, Cameron Johnson (wrist) is probable while Jae Crowder (ankle) and Abdel Nader (knee) are both out Sunday.
Oklahoma City Thunder
With this iteration of the Thunder ensuring they won in Boston they will be invested in losing all their remaining games to improve their odds of getting that top draft pick.
This has been an interesting week for OKC as they watch the other tanking clubs. The Wolves are helping the Thunder by winning which could result in OKC having better odds entering the NBA Draft lottery on June 22nd.
For now, the emphasis is to lose all the remaining games while getting the youngsters as much experience as possible to help their growth. OKC punctuated that fact via a 152-95 beat down at the hands of the Pacers on Saturday.
To that end, in the last meeting between these teams rookie point guard Theo Maledon had a career night scoring 33 points and will be looking to replicate that effort.
Aleksej Pokusevski (knee) joins the group of walking wounded (and tanking healthy rests) including Luguentz Dort (hip), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (foot), Al Horford (shut down for the season) and Mike Muscala (ankle) are all out.
