Suns vs. Thunder Gameday
Wednesday, April 22nd, the Phoenix Suns and OKC Thunder will play Game 2 of their series with OKC up 1-0 after routing the Suns 119-84 in Game 1.
Three Suns scored in double figures, with Devin Booker leading the way with 23 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Dillon Brooks (18 points) and Jalen Green (17 points) were the other Suns to reach double digits.
The Thunder looked every bit the reigning champs on Sunday, using balanced scoring to capture the win, and were led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with 25 points, although it wasn’t his most efficient night (5 of 18).
Jalen Williams also looked like the Robin to SGA’s Batman for arguably the first time since he returned from injury, as he offered 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two stocks.

Phoenix Suns vs. OKC Thunder Odds & Last 5
Last year, the Thunder rarely lost more than once versus any team, and the Suns were one of many teams they swept. The teams met five times this campaign, with the Thunder winning three of those matches.
Although the clubs have met four times in the postseason (each winning twice), those matches occurred when the team was still in Seattle.
Early on, Phoenix looked poised to grab a cemented playoff seed, but then was saddled by recurring injuries and had to battle it out in the stretch run just to make it here.
Similarly, the Thunder dealt with injuries all season long, missing their second-best player for all but 33 games, but excelled in spite of it. With the hardest stretch run strength of schedule, the Thunder didn’t miss a beat. They delivered a 19-1 result prior to taking their foot off the gas for what in hindsight seems like a strategic move, as they lost to the Nuggets (helping keep them in the middle bracket) and these Suns.
The Thunder are favored to win Game 1 by 14 points with an over/under of 215.5 points.

Phoenix Suns vs. OKC Thunder bottom line:
As I noted in the initial preview, I’m not meaning to disrespect the Suns, but after Game 1, it’s hard not to imagine this series being over in four games.
Phoenix is dealing with injuries to Grayson Allen and Mark Williams, and while neither of them are world beaters, the Suns just can’t afford to be missing anyone on their depth chart right now. They are just so much smaller than the Thunder, especially when they play both Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren.
Even in a game where SGA was inefficient, they routed the Suns using their top-notch defense, and we should expect more of the same for the next three games.

Even though a blowout game isn’t always that entertaining to watch, it’s worth catching the Thunder and Suns just to witness the best defense in the NBA.
Every player on the Thunder is invested defensively, and whether Mark Daigneault decides to shorten his bench or go deep into the reserves, each player brings quality defense to the court. I’m hard-pressed to find anyone on their roster that opposing teams could target for easy buckets.
It’s the Jalen’s in this series that offer the largest question marks. How healthy and ready is Jalen Williams? How good can Jalen Green be as a Robin to Booker and will he be thrown or drawn to the bright lights?
As good as Phoenix can be defensively, they simply aren’t in the same tier as OKC, and as Game 1 proved, they’ll be challenged to be productive from the perimeter with the swarming Thunder defense.
Diving into the statistics, the Thunder absolutely dominated:
- OKC forced 19 turnovers, leading to 34 points (versus 8 for 2 points)
- They outrebounded Phoenix 54 to 45
- Had 13 steals to three
- Won the fast break scoring battle 18 to 2
- Won the points in the paint battle 52 to 24
Ultimately, the only question is whether the Thunder can cover the massive spread of 17.5 points. Realistically, the Suns will make some tweaks and adapt, but I don’t have the confidence they will be closer than the spread, given SGA will likely bounce back from a poor shooting night in Game 1.
