Monday, November 14th, finds the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat in the first of two meetings this season. The Suns will host the second contest on January 6th.
Phoenix last played Friday in Orlando getting shocked by the tanking Magic in a 97-114 loss while the Heat swept Charlotte in a baseball set. Miami required overtime on Thursday (117-112) and routed Charlotte 132-115 on Saturday.
Last season the clubs played twice and split the contests. The Suns hold the all-time record with 37 wins in 67 matches versus the Heat.
Phoenix Suns
Phoenix will be seeking to finish their four-game road trip with a split having lost to the 76ers and Magic while netting a victory versus the Wolves.
Although the Suns got off to a hot start, injuries are plaguing Monty Williams’ rotations as he’s missing two starters.
While no injury is good, there are degrees to the severity of a torn meniscus and Cameron Johnson elected to undergo the more minor repair (think Robert Williams last summer). Of note, Johnson underwent this same procedure on his opposite knee in college.
The other missing starter is Chris Paul who is hampered by a heel injury. Although CP3 has fared better since switching to an all-plant diet he’s looked visibly slower this season (perhaps the heel has been bothering him for a while).
I’m seeing Charles Barkley in my mind’s eye saying ‘Father Time is unbeaten’ and can’t help wondering if this season marks the beginning of a steady decline for the Point God.
Ish Wainright (personal) upgraded to probable, while Paul (heel) and Landry Shamet (concussion) are questionable for Monday. Cameron Johnson (torn meniscus) and Jae Crowder (trade request) are out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
While beating a team that is 3-11 isn’t something to be jumping up and down over there were copious positive takeaways from the Hornets’ baseball sweep.
The Heat offense looked the best it has all season and while I don’t want to do the knee-jerk reaction I can’t be the only one who noticed not having Tyler Herro in the starting lineup (he’s been out injured the past three matches) didn’t hurt.
In fact, they looked much more cohesive, especially for a unit that was frankly stalled whenever Jimmy Butler sat.
To that end, for years we’ve heard pundits remark on how Bam Adebayo is on the precipice of being a top-10 or top-five player. While I’m not debating whether he is among the upper tier of players I’m not buying that overvalued stock.
Adebayo hasn’t demonstrated the ability to take over a game, isn’t aggressive (at least consistently) on offense, and there’s been no obvious expansion of his offensive skill set.
He’s been compared to Anthony Davis, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and even Kawhi Leonard in terms of his two-way ability but until he can impact winning like those individuals it’s time to stop that rhetoric.
In fact, Pascal Siakam is well ahead of him and there’s an argument to be made a player like Jarrett Allen does more overall to impact winning (hey don’t hate — I simply haven’t been impressed by his seeming regression, and passivity particularly offensively this season).
Victor Oladipo (knee) was downgraded to out while Herro (ankle) and Dewayne Dedmon (plantar fasciitis) are questionable for Monday. Omer Yurseven (ankle) is out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Phoenix’s last 6 games.
- The Heat are 4-2 SU in their last 6 games.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Despite the above Adebayo rant, I’d still take Jimmy and Bam over Devin Booker and CP3 in a two-on-two battle.
It’s a simple equation for me — Booker is All-NBA but if I have to pick one player from these two teams to bet on to go get me a bucket well it’s the guy whose moniker includes the word BUCKET!
I’m vacillating off my ‘Suns conspiracy’ predictions for this one because the Heat will feast on their shorthanded lineup.
