Sunday, May 9th, the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers meet for the third and final time. Phoenix won both prior contests on March 2nd (114-104) and March 21st (111-94) and therefore own the tiebreaker against the Lakers regardless of what happens in this game.
The Lakers are trying to move up out of the play-in tournament (they enter Sunday seeded seventh) while the Suns are waged in a battle with the Jazz for the top seed in the Conference. Phoenix has dropped to the second seed, 1.5 games back of Utah but owns the tiebreaker.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns put on an impressive performance in their Eastern Conference recent road trip defeating the Bucks, 76ers, and Knicks then returned home to beat the Clippers and Jazz.
It’s common for teams to lose the first game back after a long road trip so the fact Phoenix won and did it against the Clippers (then the Jazz) speaks to how big of an impact Chris Paul has had on this young squad in keeping them focused.

Phoenix has won six of their last seven matches and has five games remaining to close out the season with four of those taking place on the road.
After this game against the Lakers, the Suns travel to the Chase Center to play the Warriors, home for one game as they host the Blazers and finish the season playing two games in San Antonio.
Something to keep an eye on is whether coach Monty Williams rests Chris Paul at all down the stretch. With the Lakers potentially being the seventh seed it’s likely the Suns remain invested in getting the best position to avoid facing LA in the first round.
Cameron Johnson (wrist sprain) and Abdel Nader (knee) are both out.
Los Angeles Lakers
Don’t look now but the injury-hampered Lakers have dropped down to the seventh seed in the West. If they stay in this position they’ll need to participate in the play-in tournament.
That might not seem like a big deal but if LeBron James and Anthony Davis aren’t 100 percent healthy every extra game they need to play adds to the stress they are already dealing with.
They’ve lost five of their last six games including to the Wizards, Kings, Raptors, Clippers, and Blazers with just a single win versus the Nuggets who in fairness were due for a loss.
LeBron James (ankle), Dennis Schroder (health and safety protocols), and Jared Dudley (torn MCL) are all out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Lakers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
The Suns own the best road record in the NBA and while the Lakers are playing desperate ball trying to avoid the play-in tournament without LeBron or Schroder and AD less than 100 percent it’s hard to believe LA has enough to win games against clubs who are more balanced across their roster.
