Sunday, May 30th the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles will play the fourth match in the series. LA is up 2-1 and seems to be getting stronger with each game.
Chris Paul’s injury continues to be the main storyline of the series and will likely be the focus moving forward. With two full days off between games, it’ll afford him time to get extra treatment as the Suns look to even the series and make it a best of three games.
Phoenix Suns
Although Chris Paul looked slightly better in Game 3 than Game 2 he’s still definitely not close to 100 percent. He seemed to tweak the shoulder in the final frame which led to him sitting early especially with the Lakers out to a big lead.
However, Paul’s comments in the postgame were the extra free throws the Lakers are receiving. In particular, CP3 was focused on referee Scott Foster as Paul’s teams have lost the last 11 playoff games, Foster has officiated.
The 11 games date back to his time with the Clippers continued with the Rockets, Thunder, and now the Suns. At this point whether he’s right or wrong it’s such a trend it would be wise for the NBA to not let Foster ref CP3’s games because it only plays into the narrative.
Paul only took eight shots scoring seven points adding five rebounds, six assists, and a steal. Deandre Ayton delivered his third consecutive double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds with a steal and two blocks.
Devin Booker had a brutal night shooting 6 of 19 for 19 points and got ejected late in the match for a flagrant 2 on Dennis Schroder. While the foul was excessive like all the Lakers they love to embellish every foul.
Several times this season LeBron James and Schroder, in particular, have rolled around or grabbed their faces to draw flagrant fouls or techs only for the replay to show they weren’t even touched. That’s probably what Jae Crowder was chirping at Schroder about that led to his ejection shortly after Booker was tossed.
Los Angeles Lakers
Anthony Davis was always going to be the key for the Lakers in this specific matchup. LA’s lineup is much bigger than the Suns, but specifically, Phoenix doesn’t have anyone who can effectively stop Davis.
With Paul not at 100 percent that only serves to make LeBron and AD a bigger threat. In Game 3, Davis delivered a double-double of 34 points (11 of 22) and 11 rebounds with 14 free throws (making 12) but did have five turnovers
LeBron played 38 minutes so presumably, his ankle is feeling much better but there are small signs that point to him still working his way back such as his perimeter shooting (1 of 5) or seven turnovers.
He still managed to score 21 points but needed 19 shots to get there adding six rebounds and nine assists. Dennis Schroder was the other double-figure scorer with 20 points.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope left the game with a quad injury and given he didn’t return his presence is likely questionable for Sunday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Lakers are 6-4 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
While the Suns are young, they possessed the best road record and are prideful as they displayed at the end of Game 3. Granted, Monty Williams will be making sure they channel that energy more appropriately.
They’ll have ammo to draw from as Davis’ post-game comment about how the Suns were chirping was ironic given no team enjoys rubbing in their dunks or highlight plays as much as the Lakers.
The two areas the Lakers can draw from are rebounding (51 to 35) and scoring in the paint (58 to 38). That’s a recipe for success while their 20 turnovers need to be cleaned up.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Suns +6.5
LA has the better superstar talent but I’m still not convinced the Lakers “team” is better than the Suns albeit Paul’s health is definitely a factor. With the two rest days, it should pay dividends plus Booker will definitely be looking to respond.
