Saturday, June 26th the LA Clippers will endeavor to tie the Western Conference Finals versus the Phoenix Suns after taking Game 3 to get into the series.
This is becoming a trend for the Clippers who’ve opened both prior series by losing the initial two games. LA is 0-6 in the first two games of the 2021 postseason and 9-1 in all other postseason matches.
Kawhi Leonard remained out for Game 3 with no timeline for return and head coach Tyronne Lue updating he’s approaching this series with the assumption his star won’t return.
Phoenix Suns
Chris Paul returned to the hardwood after missing the opening set in Phoenix due to testing positive for COVID-19. While he registered a double-double of 15 points and 12 assists he was predictably rusty after being inactive for 11 days.
Coach Monty Williams lamented playing the Point God 39 minutes but when Cameron Payne injured his ankle early in the first half it limited the Suns’ guard options.
Devin Booker sported a mask to cover the nose that was broken in three places from a head-to-head collision with Patrick Beverley in Game 2. The star didn’t blame the mask for his poor shooting night (5 of 21) that netted a measly 15 points.
Deandre Ayton has been a pleasant surprise for the Suns playing with the poise of a vet and while he still registered 18 points and nine rebounds his Clippers counterpart got the best of him in Game 3.
Mikal Bridges (13) and Cameron Johnson (12) offered double-figure scoring.
Phoenix isn’t going to win many games when their star backcourt shoots 10 of 40 from the field but also losing Payne who is playing the best ball of his career was simply too much to overcome. Fortunately, Payne is listed as probable for Saturday.
LA Clippers
A trio of players won their positional matchups with Paul George and Reggie Jackson combining to score 50 points which gave them a plus +20 differential over their counterparts. Likewise, Ivica Zubac had the game of his life besting Ayton.
George rebounded from the two late-game free throw misses leading his team with 27 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists. He also had a tough shooting night (9 of 26) but played with aggression filling up the stat sheet. Jackson scored 23 points.
Because of the success of Ayton, Ty Lue was forced to abandon his small-ball lineup in favor of starting Zubac and he responded with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds (six on the offensive glass), plus an assist, a steal, and two blocks.
Terance Mann chipped in 12 points as the other LA double-figure scorer.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.
- The Clippers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 4-6 in the last 10 contests between the clubs.
Free Phoenix Suns vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
Despite being on the road and losing Game 2, the oddsmakers still favor the Suns by a slim one-point spread. Even though the Clippers have defied the typical historical trends, without Kawhi Leonard they’ll be hard-pressed to replicate winning four of five games. That challenge is magnified by Marcus Morris Sr. clearly not being near 100 percent.
Several factors offer compelling reasons to favor the Suns. Payne listed as probable is a huge win for Phoenix as he’ll be able to spell Chris Paul who is likely to be more in rhythm in his second game back. It’s also important to remember the Suns held the best road record in the league this season (24-12) and are 4-2 in the postseason.
Look for CP3 to control the pace better in this match and seek to get his squad back to the rhythm they’ve played with throughout the postseason.
