Tuesday, December 13th finds the Phoenix Suns facing the Houston Rockets for the third of four scheduled matches. Houston will host the final meeting on January 21st.
The teams split the two prior games with Phoenix winning 124-109 on October 30th while Houston won 122-121 on December 2nd.
Both teams last played on Sunday as the Pelicans swept the baseball set defeating Suns 124-129 in overtime while the Rockets shocked the Bucks stealing the match 97-92.
Last season, the teams played four times with the Suns sweeping the regular-season series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Rockets in 116 of their 225 matches
Phoenix Suns
Devin Booker is leading his Suns averaging 27.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.
He’s shooting 47.8 percent from the field on 20.5 attempts, 37.5 percent from the perimeter on 6.2 attempts, and 86.6 percent from the stripe on 6.3 attempts.
The Suns sure could’ve used him on Sunday when they dropped consecutive games versus the Pelicans who’ve not only unseeded them for the top berth in the West but put 2.5 games distance between themselves and Phoenix.
Even worse, Phoenix has fallen to fourth with the Grizzlies and Nuggets moving ahead of them too.
The statistics highlight the Suns’ struggles as they dropped from sixth to 10th for opponents scoring allowing 111.3 points per game while foes shoot 47.1% dropping from 11th to 16th while opponents shoot 36.1% from deep (19th).
Offensively, the Suns have slipped with their recent play scoring 116.1 points per game ranking sixth overall. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 47.7% from the field and 38.3% from the perimeter ranking 10th and fifth respectively.
Devin Booker (hamstring) and Duane Washington Jr. (hip) are out Tuesday. Jae Crowder (trade request) and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out.
Houston Rockets
Although they have only eight wins on the season the young Rockets have been playing much better of late finding a groove offensively and showing occasional commitment defensively.
Jalen Green leads the team as the only 20 points scorer averaging 21.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
He’s shooting 41.0 percent from the field on 17.6 attempts, 32.4 percent from the perimeter on 7.3 attempts, and 79.9 percent from the stripe on 5.6 attempts.
Yet the player I find the most fascinating on the Rockets (and if you love prop bets this might be your guy) is Alperen Sengun. He logs fewer minutes than Green or Porter Jr. but is highly efficient and effective.
He’s averaging a near double-double of 14.9 points and 8.7 rebounds (3.5 on the offensive glass) in 26.8 minutes per game.
Offensively, the Rockets score 110.3 points per game ranking 24th overall. Houston shoots 44.4 percent from the field which is the worst in the league and 33.9 percent from the perimeter ranking 22nd overall.
Defensively, the Rockets allow opponents to score 116.2 points per game, ranking 26th overall. Houston’s foes shoot 48.2% and 36.9% from the perimeter both ranking 25th.

It’s one thing to lose to an upcoming squad like the Pelicans but if the Suns don’t bounce back with a strong effort in Houston there will be sirens going off in Phoenix. And let’s not forget they lost by a single point (121-122) to this same team on December 2nd.
That said, the Rockets have turned a corner posting a winning record in their last nine matches (5-4). That’s a big jump for a team who had just three wins through their initial 15 matches.
Although I think Phoenix plays with desperation to capture the win I’ll take the points given the Rockets’ recent success.
