Wednesday, January 20th, finds the Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns playing for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
The teams each have 108 wins in the all-time record between the clubs. Last season the clubs played three times with the Rockets taking two out of the three contests.
Phoenix Suns
With the Suns getting hit by COVID-19 they ended up with a full week off between games between the January 11th loss to the Wizards and another loss to the Grizzlies as they returned to the court on Monday, January 18th.
While the Suns got out to a blazing start to the season, they’ve witnessed some regression, particularly on the defensive end lately. Part of that could be the early signs of players feeling sick from the virus.
In the loss to the Grizzlies, the Suns held a late lead of 98-94 but were outscored 12 to four in clutch time.
Deandre Ayton posted a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds but wasn’t able to stop the Grizzlies from scoring in the paint where they held a 52-40 advantage.
Mikal Bridges (17), Chris Paul (16), Devin Booker (12), and Cameron Johnson (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Cameron Payne (ankle sprain) is questionable for Wednesday. Damian Jones, Dario Saric, and Jalen Smith are all out dealing with the NBA health and safety protocols.
Houston Rockets
The post-Harden era has begun with the club winning the first game without the bearded superstar followed by two losses. The last game featured a 120-125 loss to the Bulls and marked Victor Oladipo’s debut with Houston.
The guard posted a 32 point, nine assist, five rebound effort, and his optimism things would improve but his desire to play elsewhere (Miami?) persists in the rumor mill.
Christian Wood came one rebound shy of a double-double with 30 points and nine rebounds. Eric Gordon (21), Jae’Sean Tate (11), and Mason Jones (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Although the Rockets played well for three of four quarters they allowed the Bulls to score 28 points to their 16 in the opening frame which proved too much to overcome. More concerning were the 20 perimeter shots the Bulls scored.
A factor likely tied to so many new players on the team, but the Rockets will need to fix their perimeter defense quickly as four of their next five opponents are the Suns, Mavericks, Wizards, and Blazers.
Sterling Brown missed the last two games with right leg soreness and is questionable for Wednesday. Dante Exum (calf strain) and John Wall (knee) missed two and three games respectively and won’t play Wednesday.
Brodric Thomas (ankle) and Danuel House Jr. (back) are out indefinitely while Chris Clemons (Achilles) is lost for the season.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Houston Rockets NBA Prediction:
The Suns have the 11th ranked 3-point efficiency in the league are licking their lips over the Rockets perimeter defense.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Suns ATS
The Rockets have some nice pieces but they need time to mesh and with core players still out it makes it difficult to fast track the issues on defense.
