Friday, December 3rd, finds the Phoenix Suns playing the Golden State Warriors for the second time this week and this season. On Tuesday in the initial meeting, the Suns took the match extending their win streak to 17 in a row.
While the Warriors haven’t played since Tuesday the Suns played the Pistons on Thursday building their win streak to 18 and establishing a new franchise benchmark in the process.
Last season, the teams played three times with Phoenix winning two of the three contests. The Suns have won 143 of the 252 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Phoenix Suns
While the Suns set the franchise mark for consecutive wins with 18 in a row they will be the team playing on consecutive nights and likely without Devin Booker who tweaked his hamstring early in the Tuesday match versus the Warriors.
It’s one thing to not have Booker for a match versus the Pistons but these clubs are so closely matched his absence will surely be felt on Friday.
On Thursday versus the Pistons, it was the Cameron duo who led Phoenix as Johnson and Payne each scored 19 points on route to their 114-103 victory in Detroit.
Deandre Ayton continues to add fodder for the reason the Suns should’ve locked him down with his rookie extension in the preseason as he delivered a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Chris Paul also offered a double-double of 12 points and 12 assists. Defensive specialist Mikhal Bridges picked up the missing slack from Booker scoring 18 points, with five rebounds, an assist and four steals.
Landry Shamet (14) and JaVale McGee (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
The Suns will be without Booker indefinitely as he heals from the hamstring injury. Joining him on the sidelines are Frank Kaminsky, Abdel Nader and Dario Saric all dealing with knee injures and only Nader with the potential to return soon.
Golden State Warriors
While the Warriors lost the initial match on Tuesday versus the Suns, something notable was Andrew Wiggins was playing in spite of suffering from back spasms earlier in the day.
If you isolate on Wiggins’ movement it was clear he was stiff and it impacted his ability to defend and his shot. His health could be the difference in this second match against Phoenix.
It’s also not very likely Stephen Curry has back-to-back games shooting so poorly (4 of 21). Undoubtedly, Bridges will be tasked with guarding him again, but look for Steve Kerr to figure out some double screen action to free up Curry more frequently at the Chase Center.
It’s also highly unusual for the Warriors to have only four players scoring in double-figures a mark that Jordan Poole (28) led joined by Otto Porter (16), and Wiggins (10).
Damion Lee (personal) was upgraded to probable for Friday. Andre Iguodala (knee) has been downgraded to out for this match. Klay Thompson (Achilles) and James Wiseman (knee) are ramping up their rehab efforts with hopes of returning before the New Year.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Suns are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Suns are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 1-9 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Phoenix Suns vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
While freeing up Curry is a priority in this match the other very real issue is finding a way to deal with Deandre Ayton both in the paint and on the glass.
The Dubs have been able to address their lack of size via their shooting, pace, and passing but Kerr will need to make some other adjustments for this match to counter Ayton and also Jae Crowder.
Again, if Wiggins is feeling back to normal I like the Warriors’ chances of ending the Suns’ streak but I’m hesitant on the spread. Let’s call it a Dubs’ win so it sets up an exciting Christmas Day rematch between these two clubs.
