Wednesday, January 5th finds the Magic hosting the Philadelphia 76ers for the second time. Philly won the initial match on November 29th (101-96). The teams will play once more on each other’s courts with Philly hosting on January 19th and Orlando hosting March 13th.
Both teams last played on Monday with Philly defeating the Rockets 133-113 while the Magic lost to the Bulls 98-102.
Philadelphia 76ers
The schedule takes a positive turn for the 76ers who’ll face three clubs this week all with records south of .500 (Rockets, Magic, Spurs). This comes at a point in time where Philly has been experiencing an uptick offensively.
In the mini three-game win streak the 76ers have averaged 113.6 points per game a good seven points above their season average of 106.1 points per game.
Yet the area of concern for this team is rebounding. Philly isn’t just losing the battle on the glass it’s leading to a ton of second-chance points.
Five in protocols with a trio questionable for Wednesday: Matisse Thybulle, Jaden Springer, Myles Powell, while Tyrese Maxey and Paul Reed are definitely out. Shake Milton (back) is out.
Orlando Magic
Cole Anthony has experienced a significant jump in his production this season scoring 20 points compared to 12.9 with upticks in assists (5.8 versus 4.1) and better shooting efficiencies in all three areas of the floor.
Yet while he’s improved and helped the club’s offense when he plays the Magic plays more efficiently on offense without him. This could simply be an outlier or it could point to his deficiencies on the defensive end of the court.
Coach Jamahl Mosley will need to take a deeper look at this phenomenon as the season progresses. In the interim rookie, Franz Wagner has proven he’ll be a major part of the future core answering every need the Magic have for their young wing.
That will likely lead to Terrence Ross being on the trade block before the deadline as the front office seeks to add another high draft pick this summer.
Cole Anthony (ankle), Mo Wagner (illness), and Chuma Okeke (quarantine) are questionable. Robin Lopez (quarantine), Jalen Suggs (thumb), Jonathan Isaacs (knee), Markelle Fultz (knee), Michael Carter-Williams (knee), and E’Twaun Moore (knee) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The 76ers are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups

In comparison to last season, the 76ers are scoring less on second-chance opportunities (11.0 versus 13.9) and allowing almost three points more per game (11.6 last season versus 14.4 this season). They rank 27th in opponent second-chance scoring.
Not getting those typical rebounds has affected their fast break scoring which is also down almost three points per game (12.5 versus 15.2).
Philly ranks dead last in rebounding (41.7), is 25th in defensive rebounding (33.5), and grabs a meager 8.2 offensive rebounds which are also 30th in the association.
Last season, the Sixers held the 10th best rebounding rate (45.1) and ranked 13th on both the offensive (10.0) and defensive glass (35).
It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out why this is happening — the absence of Ben Simmons is the answer. Simmons averaged 7.2 rebounds per game last season and his presence on the court also upped his teammates’ production on the boards.
It’s a quick fix with the right player replacing Simmons but there isn’t anyone on the current roster that has demonstrated the capacity to replace him so it will need to be part of the skill set of the player(s) who eventually arrive via his trade — assuming he doesn’t acquiesce to play for the 76ers.
Still, the Sixers are on a roll and should easily extend their win streak.
