The five-game Christmas Day slate begins with two teams who are repeatedly part of the festivities — the Philadelphia 76ers and the New York Knicks. This is the 12th time these teams have played on December 25th with Philly owning the 7-5 advantage.
This is the second of four scheduled 2022-23 matches between the Atlantic Division foes with the Knicks winning the initial match 106-104 on November 4th. New York will host again on February 5th while Philly hosts the final date set for February 10th.
Both teams last played Friday with the 76ers defeating the Clippers 119-114 while the Knicks lost 117-118 to the Bulls.
In history, the 76ers own the advantage of winning 261 of the clubs’ 465 meetings versus the Knicks. Last season the teams played four times and split the series each winning twice.
Philadelphia 76ers
The Sixers are another perennial participant in the holiday event making their 33rd appearance. They hit the holiday on a bit of a roll of late, winners of seven in a row, the second-longest current win streak in the association (Nets: 8).
This season, the 76ers score an average of 111.5 points per game ranking 19th. Philly shoots 47.5% from the field and 38.3% from the perimeter, ranking 13th and fourth respectively.
Defense is where the 76ers make their mark allowing the second-fewest opponent points per game with 107.6 and the best perimeter defense at 32.7% while ranking eighth for opponent field goal percentage allowing opponents to shoot 46.1%.
PJ Tucker (hand) is probable. Tyrese Maxey (foot) is out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
At least if the Knicks are going to appear for the 55th time on the holiday they’re getting the earliest start. It’s laughable how many times the Knicks and Lakers have appeared and while LA has superstars (LeBron, AD) it’s not like casual fans are clamoring to watch Julius Randle or Jalen Brunson.
That they are playing again when the Grizzlies make their holiday DEBUT, the Hornets have NEVER played, Raptors and Wolves have only played twice each, screams of how sponsorship dollars play a much bigger role in team selection than the quality of product!
In fairness, the Knicks are playing well this season with a recent eight-game win streak that has switched to a losing streak following consecutive defeats to the Raptors and Bulls.
Offensively, the Knicks score 114.5 points per game (14th). New York shoots 45.9% from the field ranking 24th and 33.8% from the perimeter ranking 25th.
Defensively, the Knicks allow opponents to score 111.8 points per game (11th). New York allows their opponents to shoot 45.1% from the field and 34.0% from the perimeter ranking third and fifth respectively.
Obi Toppin (non-displaced fibula fracture) is out.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction:
The earliest game on the holiday slate can often serve up sleepy efforts due to the noon start time. For that reason, I suspect this might be a lower-scoring match and so I’m taking the under.
