Monday, December 13th finds the Philadelphia 76ers facing the Memphis Grizzlies in their first meeting of the season.
Both squads played Saturday with the 76ers pulling off a big 102-93 win versus the Warriors and the Grizzlies defeating the Rockets 113-106.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Grizzlies taking both contests. The Grizzlies hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 25 of their 49 matches
Although all the cameras were on site to witness history Joel Embiid and his 76ers were adamant Steph Curry wasn’t going to make that mark at Wells Fargo and more importantly wanted to send a message they are a team that belongs in the conversation as title contenders.
Clearly, the defense is still elite but Philly sure could use more playmaking and shooting to unleash the full capacity of having a player like Joel Embiid.
Like the man of the hour (Curry), Embiid started off cold but stayed aggressive and earned 11 trips to the line nailing them all. He finished with 26 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Tobias Harris scored 16 adding nine rebounds while Tyrese Maxey (14), Seth Curry (10) and Shake Milton (10) offered double-digit scoring.
Although Matisse Thybulle scored only six points his defense was the main reason Curry struggled (6 of 20 and 3 of 14 from deep). Thybulle, Mikal Bridges (Nov. 30th), and Fred VanVleet (Nov. 21) are the trio who’ve had the best success guarding Steph this season.
On the night Zach Randolph became the first player to have his jersey retired in Memphis the Grizzlies displayed the Grit and Grind that made ZBo such a beloved player.
Dillon Brooks missed the game versus the Lakers due to testing positive for COVID but he produced two negative PCR tests in the 24-hour time limit to be available which was a good thing because Jaren Jackson was out nursing a sore knee.
Brooks scored 25 points to lead the Grizzlies. Desmond Bane continued his MIP campaign with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Kyle Anderson got the nod to start and delivered with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block. Tyus Jones filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals.
Killian Tillie chipped in 12 points as the other double-figure contributor. Already without Morant, Jackson, Brandon Clarke (and others), Steven Adams had to leave the match in the third after spraining his ankle.
Adams (ankle) is doubtful while Jackson (knee) is questionsable. Clarke (knee), Zaire Williams (knee), and Sam Merrill (ankle) are all out Monday. Morant remains out more likely due to health and safety protocols than his knee at this point.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Although the Grizzlies have won eight of nine games and managed Morant’s absence if Adams, Jackson and Clarke are all out as well (which seems likely) Taylor Jenkins has virtually no front court players let alone any depth.
Ultimately, there are only so many injuries the next man up can address but this many all as once against the lengthy 76ers (and Joel Embiid) is too big of an ask. And if they somehow pull it off then heads should roll in Philly.
