Thursday, March 25th, the Philadelphia 76ers will play the Los Angeles Lakers in the second meeting this season. The initial meeting between the clubs on January 27th was won by the 76ers (107-106).
In a marquee-type event that features two of the Association’s best teams, there is a damper on the match with both Lakers superstars out and the 76ers superstar also out.
The Lakers hold the all-time record having won 146 matches of the 284 played. Last season, the squads played twice in 2019-20 with each team winning on their home court.
Philadelphia 76ers
Prior to getting injured, Joel Embiid was having a season that found him included in the MVP conversation. He’d missed seven games during the season with the 76ers going 2-5 in those matches.
When he got hurt there was concern over how the team would fare in his absence.
So far, they’ve been fine registering a 5-1 record in those six matches. At a minimum, he’ll miss at least four more but with the 76ers winning the club won’t rush his return.
One thing to keep an eye on Thursday, however, is whether Daryl Morey makes a move to bolster the depth of the team. With the Nets and Heat adding depth, the thinking is Philly may as well.
The main focus is on what happens to Raptors star and Philly native Kyle Lowry who would definitely raise the bar for Doc Rivers squad.
Seth Curry (ankle) missed the last match with an ankle injury and is listed as day-to-day
Los Angeles Lakers
Prior to suffering a high ankle sprain in the game versus Atlanta, LeBron James had missed one game this season — the Lakers lost.
Since the injury, he’s missed the next two games and again LA was on the losing side. While this type of injury typically takes four to six weeks to heal James isn’t a typical player.
That said, James has never had an injury of this nature and he is 36 years old. For perspective, 21-year old, Ja Morant was out three weeks with a similar injury and took a good 20 games to look fully healthy.
LA was already playing without Anthony Davis who has missed the last 16 games. Although reports noted he would be reassessed at month-end – that doesn’t mean he’ll return right away as he’ll need to go through conditioning.
Suffice to say, LA is the defending champions and therefore has that championship mettle. While high seeding is beneficial the health of James and Davis is far more important.
Marc Gasol is working on his conditioning as he works his way back from health and safety protocols and is listed as day-to-day. Jared Dudley (torn MCL) is out.
