As can be seen, Tuesday, January 17th, finds the Philadelphia 76ers facing the LA Clippers for the second and final time this season. The Clippers won the initial meeting 119-114 on December 23rd.
Altogether, both teams last played Sunday with the 76ers winning a nail-biter in LA to defeat the Lakers 113-112 while the Clippers pounded the Rockets 121-100.
Last season, the teams played twice each winning on the opposing court. The 76ers hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 76 of their 137 matches.

Philadelphia 76ers
As a result, I’m still stuck on how hard the 76ers had to fight to beat the Jazz when they were the rested team and Lauri Markkanen was out.
That they barely eeked out that victory should be sending red flags up for the franchise.
So far, the key takeaway from the recent games is how ineffective James Harden and Tyrese Maxey are on defense. Maxey is more confusing than Harden because of his age and how athletic he is.
To wit, consider how the Thunder, Jazz, and Lakers carved up the 76ers’ backcourt:
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: 37 points (10 of 16), eight rebounds, six assists
- Also from the Thunder game: Josh Giddey – 20 points, eight assists
- Jordan Clarkson: 38 points, nine rebounds, five assists
- Russell Westbrook: triple-double of 20 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.
The notable part of Clarkson’s production is he took only three free throws and only nine points came from deep so he scored 22 points in the mid-range or at the rim which means a good portion of his shots were occurring on blow bys.

This season, the 76ers score an average of 113.8 points per game ranking 16th. Also, Philly shoots 47.9% from the field and 37.9% from the perimeter, ranking 11th and fourth respectively.
Furthermore, the defensive side of the hardwood is where the 76ers make their mark allowing 110.2 points per game which is the fourth-fewest.
In short, Philly ranks 11th for field goal percentage at 46.8%, and sixth for perimeter efficiency shooting 34.3%.
LA Clippers
In this case, I know it’s a constant refrain of mine in the previews about the Clippers suffering because they can’t keep both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George both on the court.
So far, I’m apparently not alone because Bill Simmons said on the Lowe Post he thinks LA needs to trade one of PG or Kawhi because they can’t win unless there is certainty one of the duo will always be healthy (and clearly that’s not the case).
In this situation, I can’t say I disagree, but the issue is neither one can stay healthy so I’m not even sure how much either could garner in a trade.
Stats
Presently, they sit 28th for scoring averaging 109.4 points per game shooting 46.2% from the field and 37.0% from the perimeter ranking 22nd and eighth respectively.
Also, defensively, the Clippers rank in the top five of all three categories as opponents average 109.9 points per game ranking third lowest overall while allowing opponents to shoot 46.2% from the field and 34.0% from the perimeter ranking fifth and first respectively.
In the meantime, Paul George (knee) is questionable while Luke Kennard (calf) and John Wall (abdominal) are out indefinitely.

Additionally, injuries could be the determining factor again and make it difficult to make a pick because George playing would push me fully behind the Clippers winning whereas his absence might be the narrow edge Philly needs.
All in all, I’m going to roll the dice and believe PG13 plays and the Clippers grab the victory.
