Tuesday, March 30th, the Philadelphia 76ers, and Denver Nuggets play for the second time this season. Denver won the initial match on January 9th by a score of 115-103.
Last season, the squads played twice with the teams splitting the contests. The Nuggets hold the all-time record having won 51 matches of the 91 played.
The 76ers didn’t add the top-level point guard they were hoping for at the trade deadline but George Hill does address several issues the club earmarked Kyle Lowry for.
Hill is a quality playmaker who can run an offense with a unicorn big (see Antetokounmpo), hits with efficiency from the perimeter, and will offer an additional calming veteran voice with playoff experience in the locker room.
The 76ers hold a one-game margin over the ever-evolving superteam Nets in the East and are currently on a six-game road trip.
Fortune struck as they faced the Warriors without Steph Curry as well as the Lakers sans LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Yet, that luck ran out against a full Clippers roster who ended Philly’s four-game win streak.
They face another tough test versus the revamped Nuggets. They’ve already registered a split at worse with the final game of the trip in Cleveland
Prior to Embiid’s current injury, the 76ers were 2-5 in games he was out this season, however since his leg injury are 6-2.
Arguably the Nuggets made the biggest trade deadline move adding Aaron Gordon to help replace the absence of Jerami Grant.
Undoubtedly, Gordon will help on the defensive end but the biggest issue the Nuggets have struggled with is rim protection. Opponents shoot 65% from five feet or closer – the worst mark in the league.
Denver ranks 24th for blocks another tell-tale sign they need to shore up the interior. So while Gordon was the sexier addition, JaVale McGee may have been the more important pickup.
Both will help improve the 20th ranked defense which has put too much of a load on Nikola Jokic. The core lineup features two offensive-minded players (Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.) and defensively lacking.
Mike Malone will have options as the Nuggets’ greatest positional depth is now at the power forward with Paul Millsap and JaMychal Green plus he’s played MPJ there as well.
In Gordon’s debut, Malone moved Millsap to the bench but will have the capacity to go big if desired using McGee to swap in for MPJ and move everyone down a spot.
In Gordon’s debut, the Nuggets recognized immediate benefits beating a red hot Hawks squad (winners of 9 of 11) by a score of 126-106.
