Denver ranks 24th for blocks another tell-tale sign they need to shore up the interior. So while Gordon was the sexier addition, JaVale McGee may have been the more important pickup.
Both will help improve the 20th ranked defense which has put too much of a load on Nikola Jokic. The core lineup features two offensive-minded players (Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.) and defensively lacking.
Mike Malone will have options as the Nuggets’ greatest positional depth is now at the power forward with Paul Millsap and JaMychal Green plus he’s played MPJ there as well.
In Gordon’s debut, Malone moved Millsap to the bench but will have the capacity to go big if desired using McGee to swap in for MPJ and move everyone down a spot.
In Gordon’s debut, the Nuggets recognized immediate benefits beating a red hot Hawks squad (winners of 9 of 11) by a score of 126-106.
