Monday, December 6th, finds the Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets tipping off in the first of two consecutive matches.
The 76ers last played Friday in a 98-96 victory versus the Hawks while the Hornets won a close contest 130-127 versus the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers winning all three contests and hold a current 14-game winning streak versus the Hornets that began January 13, 2017. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the 76ers in 58 of their 112 matches.
Philadelphia 76ers
With Joel Embiid back healthy there are games where he looks like his old dominant self and others where its clear COVID-19 is still affecting his play.
On Friday in the win versus the Hawks, he was visibly motivated to get the win. After all, this was the team that ended their postseason last year.
Embiid scored the game-winning basket as part of his 28 points, 12 rebounds double-double effort that also included four assists, a steal, and two blocks.
All five 76ers starters scored in double figures which were necessary as Hawks forward Danilo Gallinari matched the 76ers reserves who scored a cumulative 18 points.
Seth Curry was integral to the victory stealing a pass at the end of the match and scoring 18 points. Georges Niang (13), Tyrese Maxey (11), and Danny Green were the other double-figure scorers.
The win could be credited to the 76ers’ defense as they held the Hawks to a mere nine points in the final frame while scoring 20.
Tobias Harris (illness) is questionable for Monday. Grant Riller (shoulder) is out indefinitely while Ben Simmons continues to be away from the team under suspension.
Charlotte Hornets
With four players out including three starters the Hornets buckled down and implemented the “next man up” philosophy on Sunday. Fortunately, they were playing another team who prefers offense only (Hawks) and that gave them an edge.
The win was the Hornets’ first in four games ending a mini losing streak that followed a scheduled segment where Charlotte had won eight of nine.
Six Hornets reached double-digit scoring led by Miles Bridges who posted 32 points on an efficient 11 of 15 from the field and 4 of 6 from the perimeter. Kelly Oubre was moved to the starting lineup and answered the call with 28 points.
Cody Martin (19) was the top scoring reserve while Gordon Hayward (18), Ish Smith (18), and PJ Washington (13) were the other double-figure contributors.
Charlotte lost most of the key categories against Atlanta but were the more aggressive team getting to the line 28 times to 18 for the Hawks and also won the turnover battle scoring 19 off 11 Hawks turnovers while only giving up six on nine miscues.
Four players are out for the Hornets all in the NBA Health and Safety program protocols having contracted the virus. That quartet includes LaMelo Ball, Mason Plumlee, Terry Rozier, and Jalen McDaniels.

Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Philly has the rest advantage and is keen to group together a winning streak. The Hornets play better at home but missing core players in a back-to-back will be tough especially against a physically aggressive 76ers defense who won’t be lured into an offense-only match.
