Thursday, December 16th finds the Philadelphia 76ers facing the Brooklyn Nets in their second meeting this season. In the initial meeting on October 22nd, the Nets defeated the 76ers 114-109.
The Atlantic Division rivals will play twice more this season with the Nets hosting on December 30th and in Philly on March 10th.
This is the second game of a back-to-back set for Philly who lost 96-101 versus the Heat on Wednesday while the Nets arrive following a 131-129 overtime victory versus the Raptors on Tuesday.
Last season, the squads played three times with the 76ers taking two of the three contests. The 76ers hold the advantage all-time having won 118 times of the club’s 204 meetings.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid was back in the lineup after sitting due to sore ribs to face a severely shorthanded Miami Heat club. The big man posted a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds along with five assists, a steal, and a block.
Tyrese Maxey led his team in scoring with 27 points plus three rebounds, and five assists. Tobias Harris filled up the stat sheet with 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
That trio were the only 76ers to reach double-digit scoring. While the Heat were playing without Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Caleb Martin Tyler Herro (and more) Philly was also shorthanded.
Matisse Thybulle had only started in four matches this season, but it seems to be a move Doc Rivers is committed to since he’s started in three consecutive games starting with the Warriors match.
Georges Niang was out due to COVID. The 76er is among the increasing number of NBA players entering quarantine due to health and safety protocols, and is the fifth 76er impacted this season.
Earlier this season Embiid and Harris missed significant time after they contracted the virus and felt the effects well after returning to the hardwood.
Niang is out again Thursday joining Grant Riller (shoulder) and Ben Simmons who remains separated from the team. Jaden Springer (concussion) and Furkan Korkmaz (non-COVID illness) are questionable.
Brooklyn Nets
COVID is once again causing issues for teams as the Bulls had to postpone two upcoming games (Pistons, Raptors) because they have 10 players out.
The Nets were almost in the same position on Tuesday with news seven of their players were entered into the NBA health and safety protocols including James Harden.
Prior to that announcement, it was unclear if Kevin Durant would play as he was nursing a sore ankle but not only played he registered his 14th career triple-double of 34 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists plus a block.
That meant a lot of young players who’ve rarely seen the floor this year got ample playing time and rose to the occasion with vets Patty Mills (30 points, four rebounds, two assists, steal) and Blake Griffin (13 points, five rebounds, six assists, two steals) doing their best to help lead.
All five starters scored in double-figures including Nic Claxton with 16 plus two rookies registered double-double performances Specifically, David Duke Jr. (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Kessler Edwards (17 points, 10 rebounds).
Missing both their big men the Raptors struggled to match the young Nets on the glass as Brooklyn outrebounded Toronto 60 to 41.
The seven Nets who are out quarantining are Harden, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Bembry, Bruce Brown, Jevon Carter, James Johnson, and Paul Millsap.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The 76ers are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The 76ers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Philadelphia 76ers vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
Although the Nets have the rest advantage and were able to surprise the Raptors who had no time to prepare for players they’ve seldom seen on the varsity court his season expect the 76ers to be well versed on Kessler Edwards and David Duke Jr.
Moreover, Nic Claxton won’t have as an easy of a time having to defend the likes of Embiid. Although this should be a win for the Nets I’m taking the 76ers to bounce back from their Wednesday loss.
