On Saturday, April 3rd the Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz will compete for the second and final time this season. In the first meeting on February 27th, the Jazz won 124-109.
The Jazz holds the all-time record between the clubs with 40 wins in 63 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with Utah winning both contests and who hold a current four-game win streak versus the Magic.
Orlando Magic
Despite dealing with an absolutely injury-decimated roster the Magic shocked the Pelicans winning in overtime on April Fools Day. Granted the Pelicans were also playing without core members as Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Lonzo Ball all sat.
Newly acquired Wendell Carter Jr. had his best game since being traded to Orlando at the deadline. He led the Magic with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Terrence Ross didn’t have the perimeter shot falling but managed to score in spite of it posting 19 points adding two rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block.
Chasson Randle (15), Dwayne Bacon (14), James Ennis (13), and Mo Bamba (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Khem Birch left during Thursday’s game due to illness. Michael Carter Williams (illness) and Karim Mané (Hamstring) were both out on Thursday. All three are listed as day-to-day.
Gary Harris Out hasn’t played since mid-February and there is no timetable for his return from a thigh strain. Similarly, Cole Anthony remains out with no return timetable after fracturing a rib.
Markelle Fultz (torn ACL) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are both out for the season although Isaac’s rehab has progressed to on-court work.
Utah Jazz
The team with the best record in the association continues to be the Utah Jazz. A position they’ve held almost the entirety of the season.
A few teams are giving chase with seven other clubs boasting 30 or more wins but for the moment the Jazz just keeps rolling along.
Although I haven’t always bought into the hype something stands out in recent games that give a reason for pause. Donovan Mitchell is demonstrating the ability to take over games late and will his squad to victories in close matches.
In more than a handful of recent matches, it’s Mitchell stepping up in the style that should begin to garner him some MVP consideration.
In a season where LeBron James Joel Embiid and James Harden have been the main candidates discussed, injuries and star-studded rosters might eventually give way to Mitchell who is doing this without the same superstar talent.
The win versus the Bulls on Friday extended the win streak to eight in a row and offered another example of Mitchell taking over late as he scored eight of his 26 points in the final 4:19 of the match.
Rudy Gobert dropped a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Bojan Bogdanovic added 18 points, Jordan Clarkson scored 19 off the bench and Mike Conley chipped in with 13 as the other double-digit contributors.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Jazz are 8-2 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings.
- The Jazz are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings between these clubs
- The over/under is 5-5 in the last 10 contests between the clubs
Free Orlando Magic vs. Utah Jazz NBA Prediction:
The Jazz enters without the rest advantage but owns a 7-1 record on second games of back-to-back sets. The Magic got fortunate against the Pelicans but won’t be that lucky facing the Jazz, especially on their home court.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Jazz ATS
That said 16 points is a huge spread to cover and I’m hedging that the Magic keep it slightly closer.
