On Friday, March 12th the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs will meet for the first time this season.
The Spurs hold the all-time record between the clubs with 44 wins in 63 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice with each team taking one game.
San Antonio won the most recent game (114-113) played on February 29th of 2020 so it’s been over a year since these teams have faced each other although both rosters remained relatively the same.
Orlando Magic
This is the second game of a back-to-back set for the Magic who lost to the Miami Heat on the front end of the series.
Through the first half, Orlando played six of these sets, winning three and losing three of the second games of these back-to-back situations.
Albeit, each of those wins was achieved versus teams are sub .500 (Wizards, Kings) and the Hornets who were struggling at the time Orlando played them.
In the 103-111 loss to the Heat, All-Star Nikola Vucevic did his best to keep the Magic in the match collecting a double-double of 24 points and 17 rebounds.
Unfortunately, only two of his teammates joined him scoring double-figures with Dwayne Bacon scoring 21 points and Michael Carter-Williams chipping in 17 points.
In fairness, Steve Clifford is dealing with a decimated roster given all the injuries, particularly to core contributors.
Cole Anthony (fractured rib), James Ennis (calf), Evan Fournier (groin), and Terrence Ross (knee) all missed the game on Thursday and are expected to be out on Friday as well.
Markelle Fultz (ACL – knee) and Jonathan Isaac (ACL – knee) are both expected to miss the season.
San Antonio Spurs
The big news out of San Antonio is the franchise and LaMarcus Aldridge have reached a mutual decision to part ways. As such, Aldridge won’t be with the team while RC Buford hunts for a trade partner for the vet.
Aldridge was playing in his sixth season with the Spurs but had been hampered by injury the past two seasons. He played in 21 games for San Antonio this season but the hints of discord were evident as Gregg Popovich pushed him to the bench in his last three appearances.
With the Spurs embracing the youth culture and their myriad of young wings, it makes sense the plodding Aldridge who at 35 has slowed down substantially wouldn’t fit the future direction of the Spurs.
In fact, the Spurs who’ve only made four trade deadline deals in the past 20 plus seasons could break that mold and be active this season. Each of DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, and Patty Mills could be on the trade block since they are either in the final season of their contracts or have a player option.
In their first game back from the break the Spurs lost to the Mavericks in spite of six players scoring in double-digits led by DeRozan who registered a double-double of 30 points and 11 assists.
DeRozan is listed as out on Friday for personal reasons.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Spurs are 6-4 in the clubs last 10 meetings.
- Spurs are 6-4 ATS in the squads last 10 meetings
- The teams are 4-6 in the over/under in their last 10 meetings.
Free Orlando Magic vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
The Magic have lost six games in a row, are playing the second game of a back-to-back set, are missing virtually all of their core except Vucevic, and are on the road where they are 5-12.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Spurs ATS
I could play around and say ‘trap game’ but after the Spurs lost to the Mavericks, Pops will have his youngsters dialed in from the tip to get back in the win column.
